Three natives. Airborne was Navajo, and very much averted the stereotypes, since he was a lawyer and paratrooper. Spirit, however, was very much stereotyped. Aside from Dart (who came much later, in the JvC/Spy Troops/VvV era), Altititude (the original Sky Patrol one) was also a full-blooded Apache.
There were also a few characters that could reasonably be assumed to be of Hispanic descent (Zap and Shipwreck come to mind off the top of my head). |

Pretty heavy, huh? I don't want to spoil GI JOE: DECLASSIFIED for those who haven't read it, but it's in that story that she proves that she exemplifies everything that the GI Joes are supposed to stand for. She is the heart and soul of the team. There is a line in issue #1 of G.I. Joe. One of the Joes asks Hawk what their job (as a unit) is. Hawk responds "We're soldiers. Our job is to do the impossible and make it look easy." This is the edited version of the line and the one that made it into the comic. It wasn't until years later that the original text would make it into GI Joe comics. The line, as originally written, was "We're soldiers. Our job is to do the unspeakable and be forgotten." Never is this point more solidly driven home than in the case of Shooter. Now, as for why there haven't been any black female characters (in general release) I'm afraid the answer to that is rather grim and unsatisfying. For years, Hasbro has had trouble getting female figures produced. The short answer to why is simple. Female figures don't sell as well as male figures in a boys toyline. It's mostly demographics. It's also partially the notion that any female figure is basically a little dolly. Indeed, the 12" convention Baroness is essentially a violence-oriented fashion doll. To hack it down a little further, the figures tend to be produced in numbers that more or less represent their demographic. If you check the stats, most GI Joe collectors are white males. I'm sure the numbers on the various racial demographics are proportionate. However, if you break it down, females, and specifically minority females tend to represent the very smallest portion of the public purchasing these toys. The fear seems to be that they would put out this character and she would become a peg-warmer. (Though I seriously doubt this is the case.) Now, if you reverse this formula, it would seem that the majority of people buying GI Joes are white guys with facial hair. At least, that seems to be the group most represented. For ages I think hasbro was afraid to portray anyone in Cobra as a black person. Indeed, even now the only black Cobra characters of note are Claymore, (another exclusive) Burnout, and the incidental troop-builder peppered in amongst the ranks. In fact, the only minority character within Cobra to get a figure that I can even think of other than those guys is Storm Shadow. And no Hasbro, we don't want a Mr C figure. We DO want some black females though. Since Characters are getting random sex and race changes anyway these days, (Breaker, Repeater, Dial-Tone, Ripcord) why not release a new Lady Jaye figure as a black woman for the movie line?

I honestly think Hasbro should release Shooter. Bad azz lady there. That would be pretty nice to have her in my collection (2 outfits, one in plain bdu and another in her ghillie suit. Now that would be awesome!

On the Cobra's side we have Lt. Clay Moore, and Burn Out the Dreadnok. Moore actually was a somewhat major character in the episode where Dusty's supposedly a traitor. Personal favorite.
As far as native Americans there's Airborne and Dart. The line is lacking in African American females, no doubt (what, took 20+ years to get Carla "Doc" Greer?), but as a whole I always thought GI Joe was pretty good about diversity...now stereotypes...eh... Hasbro's gonna read this thread and cast Zoe Saldana (Star Trek 2009 Uhura) as Lady Jaye in "GI Joe 2", lol |

Armadillo from the Rolling thunder as well is Native American. Law seemed to be portrayed as Hispanic in the Movie. Also the Joes added Long-Range, Snow Storm, and Switch Gears none of them were born inside the US. Quite possibly Wreckage with a last name like Moreno. One that was just uncovered to me was Cloudburst with a last name like Ram, he would possibly of Hindu descent. |

Shooter is the ultra secret sniper in the team's beginnings only elaborated by DDP.
She needs to be immortalized in the form of an action figure!

What about Latinas? They are underrepresented as well.
Hasbro and IDW should work on creating more 1) women, 2) AA women, 3) Latinas, and 4) non-White men and women. I am one of those privileged white men living in the US, but even I can see that there is a few too many white faces in the Joe ranks. As for Cobra, I always thought that there was a racist element to the organization. I cannot remeber where I picked that idea up, but I tend to link the culture of Cobra to organizations like the Klu Klux Klan and the Nazi Party. |
