So a year ahead of the "Snake Eyes Movie"....why not actually market the brand or put the brand back out there in an attempt to recreate the zeitgeist of ARAH.
Some low cost "layup" ideas: 1. With the animation - Re-master the ARAH Sunbow and DIC cartoons and reissue them on popular digital download services - Amazon and Netflix. 2. With the toys - using whatever ARAH molds that still exist today, why not re-issue (again) whatever they have. Simple packaging, nothing fancy, just get the 'product out there'. 3. Using comics - create some nice compilations of beloved issues or thematic issues similar to what they did back in the IDW Classics volumes. Its an easy way to showcase the "best of Snake Eyes" issues. 4. This is the hard part that actually is going to take some thought: Make an attempt to "go viral" with their existing social media outlets. Seriously, does Hasbro even have a GI Joe Instagram? This is what the "young folk" look at 24/7. Get on there and get in their "feeds". Can a giant corporation execute this plan? |

They already started promoting the brand again. We still have a full year until Snake Eyes, and Hasbro has now added GI Joe to their super popular Transformers mobile game (which has literally millions of players) and now they’re having a GI Joe loot-crate, which again has tons of subscribers.

I'm sure as the film nears release, they'll likely double down a bit. though as much as I'd love to see it, I don't think there'll be a return to the o-ring style figures, or even what we think of as ARAH so much.
I fully agree though, with the fact that they'd be wise to include the older fans in their plans in addition to the young. I don't think that there are enough of us anymore to make that a goldmine, but there are enough to spend SOME money. As far as "going viral", yes they need to push, and push hard, but you'll also have to bear in mind that peoples' attitudes towards anything "militaristic" has changed drastically since the 2 previous most successful periods of Joe, and Hasbro has ALWAYS altered the brand to reflect the current climate: the "realistic soldier" aspect was dropped post Vietnam, and "terrorist organization" dropped post 9/11 (just two examples for brevity's sake.) I will add, just the fact that they're making a third film at all despite the previous failures is cause for maybe just a little hope- it means that they're thinking about it and at least trying to revive the brand (again. 8th time's a charm!)

This idea would actually be a dream come true, which is why I don't believe it will ever happen. I feel 100% that Hasbro should put more into the brand but that's risky in itself because if it doesn't work then they lose a shit ton of money even with those ideas.

I have to be honest here (puts on kevlar helmet and vest), I don't miss the o ring figures at all, I really like the way the modern figures kept evolving and improving, for the most part.
But otherwise, yeah, start selling some stuff. DG style with one or two accessories and "deluxe" figures with a lot of accessories, sort of the way we have star wars figures, and we have the vintage collection. |
