Years ago I thought of the Joes being part of a Navy fleet similar to a MEU. They would have a small air, artillery and armor support aboard this fleet. That way they were more mobile and could respond to a crisis anywhere. But then it was pointed out to me that air mobility would probably get them there quicker than a fleet of ships...
My other thought was having them stationed on an oil rig (like the Tactical Battle Platform) similar to how the Diamond Dogs are in Metal Gear Solid V. But lack of long range aircraft would severally hamper their ability to get to various points on the planet. Unless they had some sort of airfield on said rig that could launch C-130's, C-17's and C-5's that is.... in my headcanon, the Joes are an extensive force that tires to incorporate just about any Joe I've ever heard (except for really ridiculous ones, like Robo-Joe).
Their main base is the Pit in Utah. With no giant eyeball. It is their largest weapon and armor depot, the site of most training, and barracks for the majority of assault squads and reservists. Gen. Hawk commands, with Firewall in charge of logistics, Lady Jaye in charge of SigInt, and Mutt in charge of security. Then there are concealed satellite depots throughout the country: San Francisco, Staten Island, Bear Lake, etc. Some are automated, some are mothballed, and some are staffed by reservists (those Joes who are not currently given an active assignment). Then there are the FOB's: "Forward Observation Bases." These bases are international in scope and ditributed throughout the world as depots and safehouses. Each base is staffed by a squad that specializes in the geography and culture of the region, and when on assignment a temporary squad (usually of reservists) is rotated. South American operations are run through Devil's Island in French Guyana, where the Joes enjoy a clandestine alliance with the French Foreign Legion and often masquerade as troops guarding the European space launch facilities nearby. Claymore is in charge of the base and its squad. Middle Eastern and African ops are run through a base housed adjacent to CENCOM's home in Qatar. This is the largest armor and weapons depot the Joes have outside the U.S., in a facility under top secret guard. Dusty heads the joint assault & armor squad stationed here. European and Russian ops are run through a base masquerading as a casino in Monaco, in full cooperation with the local authorities. The outfit is run by the former SAF officer Skip. East and South Asian ops are run from a private estate in the Okinawa islands with quick access to the military bases nearby. The base is run by Budo, whose family owns the estate. The USS Flagg is a Wasp-class carrier secretly operating under joe command. Keel-Haul captains the ship, with a crew of non-Joes carefully screened for security. The ship acts as a mobile base for Joes on the move in international territory. Shipwreck is a commissioned first mate and in charge of an amphibious assault squad, while Leatherneck is in charge of security and a jungle warfare squad. Finally, there is a top secret facility in Greenland not far from Thule AFB. "The Hole" is where high-value Cobra prisoners are kept, and a joint assault & armor squad of cold weather specialists and security personnel maintain the base. Iceberg commands the squad, while Law handles base security (and interrogation/confinement). |

Yes, air mobility can get people there quicker, but, and maybe this isn't an issue for the joe team, it takes a lot of air lift to move the heavy junk-tanks, artillery, etc-and consumables, particularly ammo. Now, maybe not an issue for a high level team like the Joes that assumedly have basically unlimited funding. They can probably get more air support than your average group of soldiers.

Speaking of air mobility my main issue with Ft Wadsworth is that McGuire AFB is still about 65 miles away. The Joes would need to be air lifted via helicopter to the air base in order to respond to a crisis in a timely manner (not sure how long flight time would be via helicopter). A base with an airfield either on it or adjacent to it would make the most sense.

Also, no helos in our inventory could lift something like an M1 tank. An MRAP would be at the edge of helo lift. And this would be still be costly and time consuming to externally load each item. Now, could your joeverse contain a VSTOL aircraft that could lift heavy armor? |

Good point about Wadsworth, and given the traffic in that area, 65 miles with trucks could be all day. Personnel only could helo there fairly quickly, so maybe have equipment stashed at McGuire, because not only would helo lift of heavy equipment be costly-basically one helo or MV22 per item.

I was out of Joes altogether at that point in my life (when PIT 3 was introduced that is). |

Yes it did. Issue #67 shows a C-130 landing at the base to return Stalker, Snow Job, Quick Kick, Snake Eyes and Scarlett after the Borovian rescue mission. #110 shows a number of C130s arriving to airlift the team to Benzheen for that op. #73 has Gen. Hollingsworth arriving on a modified transport to talk to Hawk about the stolen "black box" from the Defiant.

The only unknown was what type of helicopter they would use and the speed of said helicopter. I imagine Blackhawks or Chinooks if just carrying personnel.
Yeah I thought of heavy equipment right after I posted. I agree it would be impractical to transport heavy equipment by air. In my current fanfic the Joe team does not have heavy equipment such as tanks, artillery, etc. However they still have light vehicles so those would still need to be transported. I may just have my Joes stationed at the PIT in Utah or some other area with an airfield. Assuming the Utah PIT had an airfield. I did sort of recall that your Joe team was pretty light, no need to move tanks and such, but humvees are about the largest internally transportable vehicle, and that is with the CH 53 or Ch 47. I think the Utah pit has some other obvious advantages as well. Fewer curious eyes around, easier surveillance of the surrounding areas, and ready access to training grounds. |
