It's not even a "what if", because they do.
Presently, it's a brand available for licensing (shoes, clothing, small items, etc.), but the marketing for this brand is awful. They have entered into a contract with their strategic partner, Paramount Pictures. The nature of that contract temporarily gives control of much of the brand over to Paramount, to be influenced as they will it. (Some partnership!) These movies, which never seem to get made, are all that G.I. Joe has going for it at the moment, other than the licensing which is easy money for Hasbro.

The only way GI Joe will get sold is if Hasbro itself gets bought by someone else. Same with Transformers and My Little Pony.
They COULD license the making of action figures to someone else though (like Mattel did with MotU and Super7). Seems unlikely they're willing to go that route, though. Then again, they did license the "worlds smallest Joe" stuff. |

No one. I was listing brands owned completely by Hasbro. Generally speaking, when a company owns a brand they don't sell it unless things are REALLY desperate for that company, or they were hit with some kind of anti-monopoly ruling from the courts.
Right now the only company that might have the resources and even a chance at any interest would be Disney, but they're not going to, because buying Hasbro would actually mean Disney has to work harder to make money off of Hasbro. Right now Disney gets "money for free" from Hasbro by licensing them Star Wars and Marvel and Disney Princesses (Hasbro pays them very expensive licensing fees in exchange for the rights to make toys using those characters). |
