I'm posing an interesting question (in my mind, anyways):
Reading the feedback on the ROC figures, seems like many think they are crap and fodder for the custom tables. However, feedback from the Resolute figures (custom and from Hasbro) has been generally positive. So here's the question: Would you rather have your Joes match up as closely as possible to those released in the 80's, or put a new or more realistic twist (weapons, updated clothing, but keep the core characteristics like facial features, names and genders) the same? Personally, I'm on the fence: I'm using 25thRAH, ROC (and some other figure parts here and there) to create in my mind, my definitive Joe set (which will vary from others). For example: Examples of traditionalism - Short fuse: I took the Target Short Fuse, but then made a custom harness and belt out of existing webgear I have left over, and attached the visor. I dremmeled down the original Shortfuse backpack peg so it fits (when Zap comes out, I may just swap it with his) - Grunt: I took Duke comic two pack body (the one with Red Star) and the M16, swapped heads with the brown Hair hawk (it is a toss up between that and the head that came with Starduster) and added the arctic Snake Eyes backpack. Examples of modernism - Torpedo: I gave him the diving fins from ROC shipwreck (would love to use that rebreather mask somehow if I can find an appropriate head) - Snake eyes: Use any of the reactive armor/fatigues figures from ROC, paint them black, then add the snake eyes head of your choosing (since I've always seen SE as a Sam Fisher type operative; now there are figures that I can create using that concept) - Cobra paratrooper (great on its own) - Cobra Bazooka soldier (great on its own) So which wins out: Nostalgia or progress? |

Half and half. For some characters and troops I prefer keep their original look and colors, and for others I don't mind being experimented with in terms of their look.
In my opinion Hasbro would do right by the franchise with a healthy mix of both nostalgia and progress. |

I would also say half and half. I like my vintage reworks but I also like to see new updated versions of these characters.

I'd like if Hasbro kept it like the RAH line- new figures dominate the line, with a few updates to major characters from time to time. Not that I want a zillion Cobra Commanders, Snake Eyes or Dukes, but a few here and there would be ok- for example the update they did to Stalker and Rock and Roll in the late 80's/early 90's. Vehicle updates like the Ghost Hawk and Sting Raider would be awesome too...

Yeah I have thought about this a lot and this topic seems to invite a lot of flaming from the various sides.
I come down this way. I love updates and adding new characters, but I hate it when they fundamentally change a character's core appearance (ie., Duke and Ripcord). That said, I am always more than willing to give the new manifestation a chance, because sometimes it is better than the original (ie., James Bond, Batman, etc.).

Now that Hasbro has come out with most of the Joes that I wanted in their original format I wouldn't mind at all if they started producing Resolute-style figures and vehicle exclusively, although there are still a few more from the ARH line that I would like to see produced- mostly lots of the different viper figures. I guess those could come out as figure 7 packs though....

I like my figures traditional, yet with a touch a modernism. A perfect example is Resolute Duke. He had a very classic feel, yet he came with a new gun and a plate carrier. I feel that figure was a perfect modern update.
