I have always believed GI Joe should be treated more like a superhero comic with military leanings. That's how I've always seen the comic book and cartoons.

Yes, I agree with this as well. I loved the '80's and early (very early) '90's Uncanny X-Men that was handled by Chris Claremont! I played Joe kinda like that and a mix of the westerns my daddy and me watched

No, in my opinion it should not.
"Why has G.I. Joe survived for more than 50 years in the intensely competitive toy industry? How has G.I. Joe outlasted toy concepts in an industry where the average lifespan of a toy is two years? What is the unique connection G.I. Joe has made with generations of fans and collectors? Simple! G.I. Joe is the only action figure brand based upon real life heroes. These are heroes every boy can identify with. As I write these words, I find myself staring at a poster that once hung in my office at Hasbro. The poster features artwork by iconic comic book combat artist Joe Kubert. But what still inspires me are the words on the poster written by a copywriter at our advertising agency, Griffin-Bacal: When you can't bend steel or leap tall buildings, the price of heroism goes up. SO DO THE REWARDS!" -- Kirk Bozigian, 2018, from Mark Bellomo's The Ultimate Guide to G.I. Joe 1982-1994, 3rd Edition.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. What particular elements of Marvel and DC characters and stories are you referring to? In terms of dynamic characters with fleshed out backstories, GI Joe already has that. A well-built world? Likewise.

Personally, I don't think a fantastical aesthetic would do all that much for the franchise. There are plenty of stories out there with similar characteristics, but not all of them make it big. Heck, even DC's had a rough time keeping up with Marvel at the box office despite their shared genre. I'd say much of the appeal for the MCU is its characters more than its concepts. The Avengers managed to win the hearts of the audience where the arguably more iconic Justice League could not. Think of the party scene from Avengers 2. None of the heroes were in costume, yet everyone loved that scene. Likewise, Civil War and the Snap were devastating to fans not because of the fantastical factors, but because their beloved characters suffered losses. In this light, I think it's best for GI Joe to give more attention to marketing its characters first and foremost. If the MCU could make fans out of non comic book readers, I'm certain that, with the right writers, GI Joe could do the same. I will agree though, that some aesthetic refinement is necessary. For some, the name "GI Joe" just doesn't draw them in. Similarly the military aesthetic might be a harder sell, what with the use of guns and all. For that, it might help to emphasize a secondary tagline, like Sigma Six did. But again, the aim of such marketing decisions should be to emphasize the characters. Likewise, the military focus can be downplayed some to achieve this. The first thing people think of with GI Joe would then be "Snake Eyes" and "Cobra Commander" rather than "army dudes". As for guns, I don't think this needs to be too big a hurdle. Characters like Black Widow, Falcon, and Nick Fury use conventional weaponry without issue. Even Fortnite gets away gun-toting characters. All in all, this particular aspect of Joe doesn't need to be emphasized much. Just have them pull out fairly generic looking firearms and make the muzzle flashes bright blue. No need to draw attention to what exactly they're firing. To most, I'm betting there will be little difference between these guns and the blasters seen in Star Wars. All in all, I think it's paramount for Hasbro to get people invested in the characters; the aesthetic is secondary. Last edited by Kairos; 07-09-2019 at 08:17 PM.. |
