As I’ve been planning out my future customs in groups by year and trying to choose appropriate heads I’ve noticed something... The Joe team has way more than the population average of red heads on the team..
Why is that??

Mark Weber was a red head, but the trend started long before he took over the line. Can’t blame it on him.

Can't spell "G.I." without "ginger". Or is it the other way around?

It's funny, but true. I wonder if there was a ginger Hassenfeld. Regardless, I think it's awesome. For the time, GI Joe was amazingly diverse. And, yeah, I know gingers are most often WyPiPo, but in an age of either "tall, dark and handsome" or "blonde, blue-eyed," it was refreshing. I still remember, as a kid in the midst of the "White-land" (suburban Salt Lake City), being enthralled and intrigued by the amazing range of characters of all looks, colors and genders. GI Joe was inclusive AF.

You see this in Marvel Comics, as well. My theory has always been at the time these characters were created, this was tolerable diversity. Especially for Stan Lee in the 60s and 70s, where I imagine diversity wasn't encouraged, the redhead became a sort of back door nod. Which is a huge reason I don't mind those alterations today, such as Zendays as MJ. I think if these creators were building these worlds today, there would be less gingers and more people of color.

That very well could be. It could also be that red hair just simply "popped" in both print and on toys. Regardless, thank god there were folks trying to represent the reality of diversity in life the best they could. It wasn't always for reasons of social justice either. I mean, when you're selling toys and comics, it's probably a good idea to represent as many potential buyers as possible.

Yeah, it was probably just for the visual appeal, but they do feel over represented. In the 1984 line up alone you’ve got Deep Six, Cutter, Thunder, Ripcord, and possibly Blowtorch (he could go either way).
As far as diversity goes, I’m all for it, but sometimes the way they do it bothers me. I don’t really care when they recast across mediums, like from print to film or whatever, but the “let’s retire an established character to push a diverse version” is annoying. I feel like not only are those characters rarely successful long term (like Miles Morales and War Machine are the only ones that have really stuck) but it feels cheap. Rather than just giving people a watered down version of a character they already like, hire some more diverse creators and let’s get NEW characters.
