In my opinion, the Marvel popularity comes from the team of people working on the movies. Because if it was all about the superheroes then the Justice League movie would have done better than what it did. Now if Marvel worked on GI Joe I feel that it would have a better chance of succeeding. But that's just in my mind.

That's definitely part of it, but i'd also say it comes down to how each brand's characters are handled. Marvel's characters always seemed to be bit more developed, the writing more personality driven in general. I think people find it easier to relate to Marvel's stories, especially in cinematic form. Incidentally, that's also one of the qualities that always appealed to me about the Joe universe- tons and tons of fully developed personalities.
On the other end, with the exception of (post Frank Miller) Batman, DC really seems to rely more on superficiality. Even as a kid, i could see the difference. that sig pic is cracking me the F up, by the way. That's because Marvel gives a damn about their characters. |

If you don’t believe GI Joe has any life in it, you’ve picked an interesting forum to post in. Just sayin’.

Classic Marvel characters are a huge draw at the box office, toy aisle and on the shelf, even ones that were B minus to D plus characters (The entire Avenger line) not too long ago. Guess what, ARAH Joes are literally classic Marvel characters. The blueprints are the same, same, same, same but Hasbro (and Paramount and IDW) do not seem to get this very easy to understand concept. California seems to have rotted everyone's brain.

Though California's ok where I'm at (until the weekend when the Bay Area invades us to drink our wine and act pretentious, that is!)

It has a ton of potential; however HASBRO hasn't put forward their best effort with the brand since the 90s honestly. There was a cartoon here and there since then and both movies by Paramount were poorly executed. I think the biggest thing that killed the brand was the over order of Rise of Cobra figures, vehicles and playsets in 2008 - 2009 which left many with overstock they couldn't get rid off for the next two -three years. This caused retailers to switch to carrying cheaper military action figure lines from other brands and almost completely not carrying Joes at all.
I think if Hasbro wasn't distracted with the other brands that are making them crazy money each year then maybe Joes stand a chance again, but it won't be anytime soon.
