Hi tankers, I was browsing ebay for some G.I. Joe items and found these supposed Mexican bootleg model kits based on the VAMP and Sky Hawk.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/GI-Joe-Vamp...0AAOSwrhNcfiVe https://www.ebay.com/itm/GI-Joe-Mexi...UAAOSwUXFbOmrV I say "supposed" because the seller's offer seems excesively loaded by these model kits. https://www.ebay.com/sch/endless_imp...p2047675.l2562 Given the possibility of creating such things using a 3D printer I was wondering whether these are real mexican bootlegs or just a modern 3D printer creations. Have you ever seen these model kits before? |

Have you ever seen these model kits before? My guess is that if these were ever a real thing, someone dug out the old mold and ran a few batches for themselves and this is the result. These are injection molded items, but I'll also say that it wouldn't be too hard to 3d model sets like these specifically to get a mold made for mass production. So if these were never a real thing, it would be easy enough to fake if you have a way to get the molds made cheaply enough (factory insider?). Having never even looked at injection molding costs I can't say how likely it is you'd be able to turn a profit on fakes like this, but I can say that the 3d printing part of it would be something you could do at home if you have the skills and motivation.

3D printed models in someone's basement would fit the definition of bootleg so technically the listing is correct. If they were 3D printed I doubt they would be on a sprue, I may be wrong about that.
I have never seen these though. They do not look vintage to me at all, especially the sky hawk.

The idea of collecting "original" bootlegs (made in the 80's) is owning a piece of the history of the original line that inspired the bootleg. I do not know about you but a modern bootleg is less interesting to me that a bootleg that circulated for the time the original line was released. |

I've seen the Japanese versions of these. It's no stretch that there'd be bootlegs of them.
