Anyone know the Chain of Command for.. both sides really? Just curious. I was thinking that would be a cool list to have maybe something fun for anyone who knows anything and everything about Gi Joe! I know it starts at the top with General Hawk but I was surprised to see "Duke" was a Major. I thought he was a First Sergeant originally.

You mean in the movie?
RoC Duke got promoted, in the prequel he was a LT, then got promoted to Captain at the end of it. At the end of RoC he's promoted to Major.

The Cobra rank and structure is largely unclear. The file cards do note 'equivalent' pay grades, but they are not all that reliable. Even time has altered the function of the Troopers. The blue shirt troopers started off as highly trained, but are now just entry-level recruits. Cobra Officers started off as capable field officers, but they have been reduced to NCOs.
It seems that members start off as blue shirts. After proving themselves in battle, they become Vipers. Vipers can be promoted into a wide range of fields. If they join Cobra's Navy, they become Eels. If they join Cobra's Motor Pool, they become Motor-Vipers - after this, they can join the Armored Division. And so on. I have seen the little V-pins on the Cobra Officer's helmets that comes in different colors, which could denote different grades of officers. This is just guess work, but I think is like: Black = NCO, Silver = lesser field officer, Gold = greater field officer. I notice some common Viper types with officer status. I also notice a number of soldiers who are officers by default: HISS Tank Drivers (Track Vipers), and Crimson Guardsmen. Both examples also have higher ranking members with different color uniforms. HISS Tank Driver Commanders are in blue. Crimson Guard Squad (cell) Leaders have a silver double breasted panel, and Crimson Guard Officers (Commanders) have a gold double breasted panel. The Crimson Guardsmen seem to have Political Officer status - given broad authority, if acting in the name of Cobra Commander. I have all sort of ideas about the rank and structure of Cobra, I'm making notes when I can, and I have been planing on posting after I get them all organized. |

Here's my take:
Now the top of the Hierachy is much like this: (keep in mind no one has ever died in my Cobraverse) Cobra Commander = King Serpentor = Emperor More or less equivalents although they try not to occupy the same space. CC hangs at Cobra Island mostly, Serpentor tries to do most of the fighting since he is a better stategist. CC is a better money maker. Destro = Marshall (0-10) Generals Overlord Tomax Xamot Gen. Mayhem (0-9) Lt. Generals Baroness Darklon Dr. Minbender Black Dragon Cesspool (0-8) Maj Generals Maj Gen Bludd Voltar Storm Shadow Dr. Venom Zartan Headman (0-7) Brig Generals Firefly Wild Weasel Alexander Destro Hannibal Interrogator CLAWS Commander (0-6)Colonels Mortal Scrap-Iron Night Creeper Leader Gristle Red Laser Venomus Maximus Big Boa Overkill Scalpel (0-5) Lt. Colonels Guillotine Snow Serpent Commander SkullBuster Cooperhead Zarana Lt Col Claymore Slice Rip It Crystal ball Escorpio Voador Neo-Viper Commander (0-4) Majors Zandar Dr. Knox Hotwire Skycreeper BLackout Croc Master Raptor Metal-Head Neuro toxin Razorclaw GhostBear Coil Crusher Hopefully that's everyone. Major(Gen) Bludd and Firefly and Zartan are all paid and treated like Generals, should they lead troops. Bludd does so more often. I treat him as the Commander of the Infantry Forces anyway. Scrap-Iron and Copperhead are Colonels. SCrap-Iron stopped working for Destro 20 years ago. Firefly and Maj Bludd have been employed for so long they don't really work for anyone else. Although Firefly rarely leads troop sizes large enough to be a General, he carries that rank and all its pay. It's more like a government equivalent. There are CIA agents that plan with generals and Colonels and their GS grades make them equivalents. Like most Terrorist organizations, Cobra doesn't have government ranks, but they hand out military titles like free taffy. Plus My Cobra Army is also a Mercenary Army so it's useful to rank as high or higher as the local commanders you are assisting. I mostly disregard the ranks we were given. I have one (0-6) Viper (Gold Sonic Viper) Cobra Drivers are (0-2)Lts The various other Cobra Officers and Neo-vipers and Hiss drivers are Captains or Majors or Lt. depending on which ever I have the most or least of. The more I have the lower the rank. All Specialty Vipers are at least E-5 sgts. Range-Vipers and Alley-Vipers and Para-vipers and Snow Serpents are all E-7 due to the amount of training. There are no Warrant Officers but a lot of Sgt Majors. All Dreadnoks are paid as Sgt Majors except Buzzer who is a Capt. Pilots are a little different. But since they don't command troops they are not really in charge of anyone but themselves. Wild Weasel is the exception. I assume some of the more specialty Vipers have higher ranks to start with in general, but they hold ranks just like any other unit. Therefore a Sgt doesn't outrank a Captain ever. I see it like this. Bottom rung is a Blueshirt. Really a private. He maybe gets some Cobra basic training/indoctrination and is handed the standard issue Dragunov Rifle cause cobra got those at a bargain price during the cold war. Once he gets a promotion he can continue to move up the ranks in the Blue Shirts regular units or he can get specialized. I would say a majority of the Cobra operatives are blueshirts. Supply guys, maintenance, security, transport, ditch-diggers, basic logistics. Should they want more money and danger they move to the Viper Corps. These are Cobra Assault troopers. Either a Ranger or Marine Equivalent. Once they complete the training they are Corporals (E-4) You first need to complete Viper training to move to any of the other Viper Specialties. For this fact alone All Specialty Vipers are at least E-5 sgts. To become an officer in any unit of Cobra you just have to be the most ruthless guy around. It's more of a title than anything else. You get paid more but you have to answer to someone above and battlefield executions of officers are common. So any Cobra Officer is not afraid of anyone. The rank of (0-4) Major is about as high as a faceless Cobra gets. Many of the named Cobras are at least (0-5) Commander. So Rip-It, Skull-buster, Claymore, Snow-Serpent Commander are all (0-5), and they are as ruthless and tough as Cobra has. Now Crimson Guards that's an interesting one. For me since there are a million versions now. (This is my verse of course) All are officers, they are commissioned as Capt. right off the bat. You figure all are college educated and Lawyers or accountants. So much like our Armed forces they get commissions. They are the spies of Cobra as well. But they have other roles as well. Like the SS they are the best trained troops in Cobra. They are the Political Officers of Cobra, sort of like how Soviet era Russia was set up. So he may not be the field commander but he could just as easily put a bullet in the field commanders head and take over.. They are trained as military officers and are usually brighter than what gets put in the field. Shadow Guards are the Gestapo wing of the Crimson Guards. Crimson Guard Immortals are the Highest ranking CGs and they do serve as battle field commanders occasionally. They all hold the rank of Colonel. They are only tapped for duty to serve with Cobra Commander. Cobra Commander does not travel lightly armed. But he keeps his detachment with him at all times. If one of these guys tells you to do something you know it came straight from the Commander. Crimson guard commanders are 0-5 equivalents and they serve as Battlefield commanders and are the next step down. Most CGs are Capts or Maj and there is one attached to every unit. Wow.. good work on that stuff! I don't know about you guys but when I was in the military Promotions where a big thing and ceremonies usually entailed. You would think they would do a better job notifying us when there's a promotion. Also I noticed on the Movie card that Ripcord is supposed to be a pilot, but last time I checked you can't fly anything in the military if you are enlisted unless you go to Warrent Officers school.. ie Wild Bill!
