That Marx Navarone set is amazing! I see them from time to time at the Chicago Toy Show and they are always impressive.

I would be tempted to put Mobile Command Center on the list. What was the price point? That is the real designator for me to signal Christmas unobtanium.

I wonder what price that toy was listed for in 2003 when the Mobile Command Center was sold for a second time, but came with Leatherneck instead of Steam-Roller?

I got plenty of awesome Joe stuff for Christmas over the years (the Whale and Tomahawk being two of the awesomest), but the MCC was the only big playset. And I remember it being a total surprise! I hadn't asked for it (my parents generally didn't get me stuff that big) and I believe -- but I might be wrong about this -- it was the Christmas of '88 (rather than '87, the year it came out). I suspect my parents found it on clearance somewhere and said "what the hell." Glad they did! Still have it.

I forget how old I was but one year my dad got laid off from his job and we had to have a very curtailed Christmas. We moved the next year for his new job and to make up for the previous Christmas I got a USS Flagg under the tree.
Had it in my room for years till stupidly at 16 I was embarrassed by it and got rid of it. |

I got the Whale for Christmas. My mom later said she looked all over the place for "That Thing". Got the Falcon in '78. Both of those I played with forever.
May have got the Tomahawk at Christmas, another favorite. Got the Battle Platform for my 14th birthday from a friend that knew I still collected Joes. We had a slumber party where we had a big war. One of my other friends was a little more mature than us, but he built a nice town of blocks and seemed to have a good time. Didn't get the Flagg, Defiant, and Terrordrome until adulthood, buut one of our friends had all of them. He was one of those kids who kept everything pristine, so I bought some of his stuff later and it was still minty. |

One Christmas, my brother 2 years my junior and I walked out, to find a v2 Snake Eyes (mine) and a v1 Storm Shadow waiting for us. One was flying a FANG and the other was along side a White SNAKE. They weren't packaged, but were ready to play with, staged out looking bad ass.
We loved them, and a few weeks later when pilfering in the top of my oldest brother's closet, checking out his big GI Joe vehicles, we find the boxes to the FANG and the SNAKE. Of course we get them down, cause they were our boxes. When my oldest brother came home, he took them back. The boxes and flag points were apparently not a part of the gift from my mom. The cost of him ensuring the joints were working properly I guess.... |

Being an only child I was kind of spoiled with playsets. As far as big ones, I had the Navarone playset, Crystar's Crystal castle, the Starbird base, the D&D Fortress of Fangs, the Death Star, the Millennium Falcon, Castle Greyskull, the He-Man slime pit, the MASH camp playset, and possibly others I can't think of right now. Definitely the Kenner old west / repainted Star Wars cantina. As far as Joe, I got the battle platform maybe for my birthday when it came out, then in 85 I told my whole family the only thing I wanted from everyone for Christmas was the Flagg, which I did not expect to work, but it did! I still have it today, with all the missing parts replaced. Later on when I was just about out aged of it, I got the MCC for Christmas just because I thought it was awesome, which it still is, and I still have that as well, which I am restoring. No other big Joe sets. Unfortunately, out of all that the two Joe sets are all I have of my original stuff :(

It’s interesting to me that so few of us that still are into Joe had the big 3 when we were kids. I wonder if that has something to do with our continuing interest. I bought a Porsche 928 because it was unimaginably unobtainable when I was a kid.

Sounds like a lot of us got the Whale, as did I. It was and still is the best to me! I didn’t even ask for a Flagg. I knew my limitations.
