Did you know, Snake Eyes was officially a ninja way back in the year of the OG release? Yes, 1982, not 1983. How can this be confirmed as a fact? Well, lets look at some dates: SE was officially named as a ninja in ARAH issue #10 (cover date April 1983). Given that newsstand books were released to market three months before the cover date and the cover date was in fact the removal/return date, this means the book was actually released in January '83. Production of book takes at least 3 months, and maybe more, so this puts the Hama writing date in late fall/early winter '82.
So for those of you who might be curious when SE became a ninja, it officially happened in '82. Happy Holidays and Yo Toe!

But does the pre-production time actually count as Snake Eyes being a ninja? That's like your supervisor calling you into the office to say that it was discussed and agreed upon that you will receive a promotion in the next two months. So it's on the horizon but you really can't move into the bigger office until the two months finally comes.

How about the comic fact that after Snake-Eyes left the army, he eventually followed storm shadow to Japan and became a ninja. It wasn’t until later that he was recruited by Hawk to join the G.I. Joe team, which was still some time before he ever ended up donning the black custom we see in the 1982 action figure. He was a ninja years before 1982!

I assume Bubbavader meant the point at which someone in Hasbro or Marvel officially revealed that Snake Eyes was a ninja. It’s trivia, but a fair question considering that nobody originally had any specific ideas for the Joes or their backstory. The only reason Snake Eyes came about was because the designers ran over budget for paint apps and thought an all-black character would be a cool work-around. The version of the story I heard was that Larry already had notes for a stealthy assassin type character, which he then turned into Snake Eyes.
I suspect Larry intended Snake Eyes to be a ninja from the beginning. It’s one of the very first issues where they reveal Scarlett (ostensibly the Joe martial arts expert) is exceeded by Snake Eyes. That doesn’t happen by accident! I can’t remember exactly which issue it is... I don’t have my comics with me at the moment. |
