I was originally going to post this when I saw the new helicopter had another Wild Bill (a figure/character I never really liked). The Joe team has what, 8 copters, and only 2 designated copter pilots? Plus, I was (am) getting a little bored of the same characters.
Of course since then there have been a few new characters announced. Joe has Speed Metal Agent Helix Sgt Stone Ice Storm (unless he is a renamed Snow Storm…) Air Raid maybe Bench Press (I read on the Joe Club site that some one on this site said some one at Hasbro said he Bench Press was not Rock N Roll and should not have his file name ;) ). Cobra so far only has Night Adder and Nano-Viper (both individuals according to their file cards). I for one am glad to see some new blood and hope to see more; I was wondering what others thought. I read on the Club’s forum that some people had complained about new characters in the convention sets, because they did not know anything about the characters. I can understand that when it come to spending 250 plus on a set of figures, even though I disagree with the thought and think it is kind of silly. Kevin |

I think it's great to see the new characters. It gets tiring to see 84 versions of Duke and Snake-Eyes. I like the new characters, and I think the figures are well made, and most of the accessories are very nice.

I apply the same standards to the new characters as I do the old ones. If they're well-designed and their inclusion makes sense within the context of the Joe team (depending on which "version" of the Joes we're talking about, of course), at the very least, I'll consider buying the figure or search out their comic/visual media appearances.
That being said, of the totally new characters being introduced in the RoC line, Sgt. Stone is the only one I'm interested in (and the argument can be made that he's not a "new" character at all, since a "Lt. Stone" was prominently featured both in GI Joe Extreme and GI Joe Sigma Six). Agent Helix is a neat stand-alone figure, I suppose, and she fits well enough in the slightly more fantastical setting of the RoC film and video game, but I really feel that she's a thinly veiled derivative of Rare Studios' Joanna Dark, from the Perfect Dark series of video games. The fact that Helix was primarily designed by the game developers at Double Helix Studios sort of makes the similarities all the more glaring: Double Helix Studios' Agent Helix & Rare Studios' Joanna Dark I don't know who's more at fault here: Double Helix Studios for creating an obviously derivative design (right down to the two-toned hair) of a well-known video game character created by a rival studio, or Hasbro's design team for failing to catch the similarities and/or not asking Double Helix Studios to tweak the design a bit so as not to look like a belated copy of Joanna Dark. |

I wondered about Sgt/Lt Stone, and as far as I can tell, Lt Stone was not given a file name, so I still do not know. I would, however, consider characrters like Sgt Savage, D-Day, Freight and Iron Klaw as 'new' if they were made in the 3 3/4 scale.
I think Air Raid looks OK, but like a few others out there, I think the Firebat should stay with Cobra (unless it is in Night Force, Tiger Force or Sky Patrol) so I will likely pass on that. Ice Storm looks like a middle class guy from New England out for a morning jog, but he is new and I like the sub, so I will be getting that. Quote:

I thought Helix was an abandoned mold for a new X-Men Rogue figure. I plan on buying 2 when I see her, one for my Joes and one for my Marvel Universe collection(s)..

I like New Characters, its a way to bring in new collectors and people into the Joe-verse. I too and tired of constant repaints of the same characters. I like remold's though! But you do have a point, kdu2814, Joe definately needs more Pilots. Preferably Commissioned officers and Warrents.
