Perhaps, but it was those "100 out of millions" comments that caused him to remove himself, as the others did, from social media.
So those few ruined it for the rest. Those few that put a black eye on the fandom.

“A lot” is a meaningless descriptor. If you are trying to take an extreme minority of commenters and paint a broad stroke about a significant portion of the fandom, you have to be specific. If 100 commenters out of millions of fans make racist comments it doesn’t reflect anything about the fandom; they are exceptions, not rules.
Since the movie was actually pretty popular, unlike TLJ, it may be true that old prejudices played a numerically small role in determining people’s reactions. (Critics of TLJ take note, this is useful evidence in your favor!). But these complaints *were* a large part of the negative reaction among a big fraction of those who did react negatively. I myself saw more about not liking female action heroes, and about the Poe-Finn moment, than about Boyega’s race, but both/all were common themes among, idk, probably half of people who actively disliked that movie. Among SW fans on SW sites, anyway, and throughout general nerddom. One in particular comes to mind... |

Or could it be the toxic creators who in attempt to expand their fanbase do things to piss off the original one to get press coverage, to have more people looking at their product. Or maybe a combination of both. If you really want the truth it always lies in the middle.

I'm not sure Star Wars was ever in need of press coverage.

It actually does sound like you have good intentions, but writing a both-sides post on the literal anniversary of Charlottesville? Really?

for years I have spoken out in defense of Hasbro and The Club. Through my other Geek Hobbies, one being World of Warcraft, I have discovered that there is a deeper impact than just spewing so much negativity and criticism: it dissuades people from pursuing careers in these fields for these brands. Its now referred to as Toxic Fandom.
Whether fandom has a negative or positive opinion of anything, I reserve the right to come to my own opinion about something. I like what the Club has done with G.I. Joe over the past couple of decades. I wish that I could say the same for what Hasbro has done in the last couple of years, but I hold a very negative opinion on that topic, and still think it was a mistake to let go of G.I. Joe brand manager Mark Weber. There is little concern on my part that “toxic fandom” will dissuade people from applying to Hasbro for a job to create toys that we like. It is more likely that Hasbro receives more job applications every year than they have job openings for. More concerning to me is that “political correctness” might cause G.I. Joe to be labeled as a war toy, and put on hiatus, or that “social engineering” could lead to people similar to Aubrey Sitterson doing the sort of things he did. I was once a nine year old boy experiencing Star Wars for the first time, and loving everything about it. Today, I can’t stand what it has become… it’s like a punishment to sit through one of those movies, but I did it for my children. Recently, my children came to the point that they can’t stand to look at it. I offered to take them to see the recent Solo movie, but they declined. Maybe someday in the future I will attempt to watch it, five or ten years from now. I just don’t want any part of that franchise anymore. I like G.I. Joe because of my own opinion of it. Neither “toxic fandoms” or “atoxic fandoms” will decide that for me.

While I respect your opinion, I don’t share it. I have no use for “toxic fandom”, “political correctness”, or “social engineering” in my life.

That’s his problem if he can’t handle social media which is a cesspool. It still doesn’t reflect anything on the fandom which is inherently describing a broad group not narrow exceptions.

It’s quite true that there was a sizable group that disliked TFA while saying nothing objectionable about any of these matters, but it’s also an established part of history that a lot of people who did dislike it took the view that Star Wars done correctly is necessarily by white guys, about white guys, for white guys.
