Technically, the original Destro Action figure used a "high density laser gun", not a broom handled Mauser. There's somewhat of resemblance, added to the fact Han Solo's blaster was a modified Mauser. Either Hama or the artist(s) chose to use the Mauser in the comics, though. I can't recall seeing CC's blow dryer laser pistol in the comics, either.

That rifle first appeared with the 1983 Snow Job action figure, and was called the XMLR-3A. It was the most commonly used laser rifle in the Sunbow cartoons, and so Hasbro used the only name of any laser rifle that they had at that time, Flash’s XMLR-1A laser rifle, but they changed the last part to -3A to differentiate it some from the one carried by Flash. You can tell just by looking at it that Ron Rudat must have been the person designing it. Here’s why… The real clue to that rifle’s identity is found on the blueprint of the 1985 Cobra Rifle Range battlefield accessories set. There it is listed as an L-88 7.65mm “general purpose machine gun”. That means it is essentially a BAR, or squad automatic weapon of the WWI to WWII time era. It fires the 7.65x53mm Mauser round, and was nicely animated with Hawk firing it as an automatic rifle in the intro action sequence of the 1987 G.I. Joe movie if I remember correctly. That probably means it is, or was based upon, the Model 1925 (R75) Colt machine rifle. It has the correct ammo, a pistol grip, ejection port, and many other characteristics of this weapon. It would be referred to as a light machine gun and SAW later, but at the time was described as a machine gun or machine rifle. It was eventually replaced many years later by the invention of the M60. Such an old weapon appearing with the Joes has all the telltale signs of Ron Rudat, in my opinion.

I don't know the name of that gun, but it came with the 2008 Flint in Cobra disguise.

But the Troopers look a little silly in it. They seem to be wearing low neck, blue pajamas. I much prefer the falling collar look in the vintage trooper or the more realistic update in Pursuit of Cobra / 30th Anniversary.

Snow Job came with that rifle, both the vintage and the 25th Anniversary.

The good guy laser rifle also came with Snake Eyes/Lady Jaye/Flint from the 2009 5-pack, the G.I. Joe Troopers from the Firefly/trooper pack, Duke from the DVD Battles pack, and probably many others.
One of the 25th Cobra BATs also has the bad guy laser rifle, the one from the Defense of Cobra Island set. |

The Cobra gun doesn't really show up often enough to be a replacement option for the Dragunov. I might still someday try to pick up a few just to see a couple of blueshirts wielding it.

Yeah, I always assumed that Cobra gun was an expy of the MP40, but the M3A1 seems a better match profile-wise. (Both are from the same time period anyways.)
