I've been wondering about the influence that Star Wars may have had on GI Joe. Hasbro said (I forget where) that Star Wars is why Joe went to 3.75 scale.
But I was also thinking of the similarity between Darth Vader and Cobra Commander: metal-like masks hiding the face of an evil leader of troops in identical costumes, I mean uniforms. Destro's mask is similar to Vader's, too, and Destro is also TALL like Vader is. CC sometimes wears a cape like Vader. But the battle helmet & troops are the root of my question.... Could Vader have influenced the designers of the GI Joe universe in between the release of the original Star Wars : A New Hope and the launch of 3.75 Joe a few years later? I know it's 100% coincidence....

Probably not completely... After all Joe was trying to capture the same market (boys that like that scale of toy) that Star Wars had.
The scale was definately influenced by the Kenner Star Wars toys. Hasbro just one-upped 'em in the articulation department. Even the straight arm Joes were more articulated then the Star Wars.

I don't know but if you listen carefully while watching the 80s Joe cartoon you can distinctly hear reused Star Wars sound effects.

I hadn't thought of that, but of course.

All those old 80s cartoons reused soundeffects from other cartoons and shows.

RoC/The Doctor seems to be "Vader Light". But Cobra in itself were a rip off of the Hydra.

I have always known of the similarities. Hasbro was very good at mimicking other successful toy lines. The original 1982 release was more military based but as of 1983 GI Joe took on the science fiction feel of other 3 3/4th figure lines of that time. I think that was why I liked it so much.

Marvel Comic's default terrorist organisation.
It's no secret that Cobra was based off Hydra. Larry Hama who worked for Marvel at the time wanted a comic with Nick Fury and SHIELD against Hydra, but that idea eventually formed into the GI Joe we all know today. Facinating stuff. You should read up on it. |
