I own a large cargo shipping container that I use for storage of random oddities. It looks like I'm going to be moving soon for a job where I will probably stay for 2 years. I don't want to lug my entire collection with me to a tiny ass studio apartment, so I'd just like to store it for the time being. My only concern is that my container is the central valley in California, where it gets really hot in the summer (100+ degrees). It also gets pretty cold in the winter, no snow anything, but cold enough to make our grass freeze over. Will this be bad news for my collection? Any tips to help prevent damage to all my plastic? thanks!

3 tips:
1. Make sure it's climate controlled. The cold may make the plastic brittle, and the heat may discolor it. 2. No sun. Keep it out if the sun to prevent fading and discoloration. 3. Acid free bags. If your collection is loose, then store in acid free bags. The regular zip lock bags will discolor your figs.

So My basement is sub divided into 3 sections, rear is all my mechanicals, then my staircase, on the far side is a room with a window, then beyond that my tool room. The spare room is over 12’ away from and mechanicals. I blocked out the light to the store room even though my collection is in opaque bins. Light creates heat. Even in bins, sun light hitting the bins will heat them. I used metal washers to screw corrigated plastic to the window jambs.
I keep the bins off the floor to prevent and drastic temperature swings, but a basement floor below the frost line SHOULD always be 65 degrees- standing ground temperature. But you never know. Look up ultra zip. They have acid free bags in all sizes, but I know for smaller, figure sizes bags are sold in quanties of 1000. But hey you’ll have extra. If you want to keep Using large zip lock bags i’d swap them out every couple years. So keep the toys away from heat, moisture, and natural light, limit unnatural light, and try to use a basement with less temperature swings then say an attic. Feel free to PM me with and questions.

look into underground storage. im sure there are some around the country. i've used this place to store my cars Boat, Car & RV Storage in Pittsburgh | Brady’s Bend they have all sorts of places to store things here not just cars. i've seen bus sized rv's, they also have file storage, boats, etc.
they have climate controled spaced with circulating air which is important so the air isnt stagnant. i could have put my car in one but chose not to after seeing the state of the cars in the bay i was going to be assigned. there were supercars in this bay and they had hardly any dust on them and looked perfect. no idea what the file storage looked like since i didnt have anything to put in there. i havnt been there in some years now that i have a home with a big garage but it's something to look into. it's a haul from cali to this place in PA but i'm sure if you google underground storage you can find options closer to you. |

all of the above, i'd go for climate controlled storage, acid free bags, ways for boxes/totes to breathe, and keep anything valuable or sentimental on me
i had a lot of figures stored in what i am pretty sure was non-climate controlled storage for almost 3 years while stationed overseas. no vintage joes in there, mostly transformers spanning the entire line. things that didn't go well: 1. some white figures yellowed (i thought i'd kept them out of the boxes going to storage) 2. rub signs/heat sensitive things were whacked; some recovered, some didn't 3. some blisters separated from the card the good news is all of the vintage rubber tires seemed to have survived. i stored my mauler in a box with packing peanuts in my parents' basement for 10 years; the treads melted some of the peanuts that they touched. good luck with the move and storage - |

I think it is goin to cost you to do it right. I have stored for 20 plus years in all sorts of conditions ranging from the parents attic (extremely hot and water damage from being near pipes that had leaks) to the routine storage unit that experienced Ohio temps for years. North Carolina garages. Colorado basements. I now have everything stacked I need a closet or on a set of industrial shelves in a spare bedroom. If you truly value everything then spend the money on climate control. If not just be prepared for some plastic to fail, tiresand treads to melt. You know Mark Bellamo has a huge collection. I know for years he had storage units. If you are a FB friend of his, maybe you ask him.
