Every year G.I. Joe chooses an amount of new recruits (best of the best) from all the branches of the army. They are generally at least sargeants, although some corporals considered outstanding ones are also invited. The new recruits remain greenshirts until they are promoted to Steel Brigade before they finally graduate to Joe and allowed to choose their own attire and weapon/pets/accessories/pack/equipment.

ADD IN : Complete a number of missions as SB and can go thru the Joe selection process.

One of the principles of special operations is that SF do not replace conventional forces. They have a unique and distinct role on the battlefield and they are not MTOE'd in such a way as to sieze and hold terrain.
I always thought of the green shirts as being conventional infantry, and Steel Brigade being elite forces something akin to the Army Rangers. Which begs the question: Is the Steel Brigade actually a brigade-sized element? Or is that just a name? |

I always viewed green shirts as those who filled out support roles and participated in domestic skirmishes. Steel Brigade was used for special ops and foreign engagements. I also like the idea of going from green shirts through SB's in order to qualify for Joe status.

so if the joes are an elite part of delta force then does that make your steel brigade charlie force? that would be one better then delta? :P

I always saw Steel Brigade as an elite part of the Joe team. If the Joes were one of the more special ops forces of the military, then the Steel Brigade was the special ops of the special ops. If green shirts were potential Joes, then you made your way up to part of the team and then worked your way up to Steel Brigade.

i think its steel brigade in name alone. a way to say that the few are as strong as a brigade and touch enough to be a joe. you got "got to get tough..yo joe" lol idk i think its just a fancy name, it is a fantasy world after all.
but it is very interesting to see how everyone views these two groups. i think its safe to say that green shirts are fancy fodder. i wonder what hasbro's intent was in their brain storming meeting when this original build-a-figure was introduced and the embodiment of them in the future when they came out with the pack that included the plague troopers. |

Steel Brigade is a great ME figure. I like to think they're potential Joes and above green shirts. They should do another character who rises thru the ranks of SB to become a Joe.

I can see what everyone is saying about how Steel Brigade is a tryout Joe position. That seems to be how they have been portrayed in more recent file cards and whatnot. Back when they were released, though, and when there was nothing in the media to influence our thought processes, I know that I certainly didn't see the Steel Brigade as anything less than one of the best soldiers in the unit. (Of course, this was us, so who would fantasize about being someone like that?). Steel Brigade was the best that the unit had to offer and therefore got access to the really high tech equipment. My character wasn't hoping to one day become Grunt. Grunt was hoping to one day be accepted into the Steel Brigade team. |

Joes are Joes, in our fictional world Joes are the best of the best otherwise call the collection G.I. Steel Brigade and only let's play with them. That is why having a complete army of SB that equals or surpassing Joes makes no sense, at least to me. |
