I have my doubts. Over here, Hasbro hasn’t sold GI Joe toys in the UK since the Rise of Cobra line. Renegades and Retaliation didn’t kickstart the brand in the US. It seems that they are relying solely on the old fans buying whatever they produce and that isn’t sustainable. Without actually trying to make the brand attractive to kids it is going to die out.

We know they hired a new brand manager a couple of years ago and we've heard a lot about the limited budget and restrictions they faced for the 50th line. My guess is the Joe team were given a couple of years to develop a new Joe concept, the higher-ups didn't like whatever they came up with, so they decided to cut their losses, fire the brand manager, put the brand on hiatus and start fresh. Right now, I suspect they're working on it and maybe trying to decide whether the "shared universe" is the way to go or not (among other things like conducting market research and testing new concepts). I was glancing down the toy aisle the other day looking at what Hasbro was stocking the shelves with. I noticed a distinct lack 3.75" figures. 12", 6" and 2.5" 5-PoA figures for everything from Marvel and Disney.
If there a future for GI Joe, I don't think it will be in 1/18th scale. |

Honestly I think now is probably not the best time for a GI Joe relaunch. The military theme is somewhat controversial and patriotism is not at a high point. Kids are less interested in toys and they want movie licensed stuff. I wish it was the 80's again but it never will be.
I think in a few years GI Joe could be relaunched as something with an adventure and/or super spy theme. But it most likely won't be 3 3/4" and probably won't be in a style pleasing to us old farts. It might not even be a traditional action figure. It will probably be aimed at a younger audience and most likely value gimmicks over details. I wish Hasbro would license the name out to someone who would do a super detailed collectors line like the Sideshow 12" figures but in 3 3/4" scale. But they have said they're not interested in doing that so. . . |

Why Hasbro's president is not a true G.I. Joe fan?

I think the most we can expect is to see characters show up as supporting roles for other properties, like as "drivers" for MASK/Transformer vehicles. Not as a dedicated line. As other folks mention, the environment is really not good for a semi-realistic military toy line- at least not for one targeting a market of kids under ten years old.
