I have never stopped buying, collecting or playing with them. I got Rock N Roll at K Mart in Manhattan KS. The second weekend of June, 1982. We were at a family reunion and my Mom went to the mall and said I could get a Star Wars guy, ran to the figures, and saw the Star Wars guys, I had a Snowtrooper in my hands when I turned around and there were these army men who could move better and had all kinds of guns backpacks and helmets. I debated with what seemed an eternity and finally put the Snowtrooper down and chose Rock N Roll. Never stopped in high school, I kept my collection set up in one of our extra bedrooms in the walk in closet to avoid social genocide ( I do miss the days when not everyone was a nerd). The day I graduated from high school my best friend and I got up and got all of our Joes out and we had one last BIG GI Joe adventure / battle together. I continued to " buy Joes for my nephews" into college. Met a good bud who also was a Joe fanatic, it was awesome hunting Sgt Savage with him back in the day. We even played Joes in college lol, when the Cowboys beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl , we were at his parents watching the game and messing with Joes. When the TRU 97 stuff came out I was ecstatic, went to TRU everyday buying stuff. The 2000 line was awesome, loved the repaints , loved the orange and blue packaging. When JvC came out I was in hog heaven, new Joes new characters....and the Neo Viper fit in nicely with the vintage Joes. Online community was the best from 97 to 2007, once the 25th hit to many fans ruined the tight knit community. But the toy line was / is outstanding. I have a collection that is way to big, but Star Wars and Joes are the one "friends" that no matter how crappy life gets and people come and go they "never" go away.
And when I say never stopped playing, I literally mean that. I have nine month hiatus(s) every year, but I am a teacher and once the end of May gets here my Joes come down from their shelves and go have backyard adventures all summer long. Last edited by B and H Comics; 06-28-2017 at 11:48 AM.. |

I started in '88-'89 with figures like Spearhead & Max, Hardball, Deep Six v2, and Budo. I was able to get more figures each year, and stayed with it through '93. My brother was still getting them in '94, but I was 12, and had just lost interest in toys in general. So the original line just happened to die out at the same time I became "too old for toys."
I picked up a few here and there in the years following, some from ARAHC and VvV. When the 25th hit, I was hesitant at first because they didn't match up with my vintage figures, which I still owned. But I eventually came around. Unfortunately, this was a down period for me financially, and I wasn't able to get too many figures until the ROC line. 2016 was the first year I was able to get every figure that was released at retail. Looks like I'll have to wait a few more years to be able to do that again. In the meantime, I have a lot of holes in the collection, and with two boys, ages 5 and 1.5, I have an excuse to keep getting more.

I got my first Joes as a 6 yo in 1983. I continued playing with them until about 1990, when I lost interest and the figures became a little different. From 1997 to 2000 when I was in college and became an ebay-aholic, buying up all the vintage figures I missed between '82-'90. Then I graduated, got a job, got married and had kids, all of which had me miss out on most of the 25th and 30th stuff. After buying all of the 50th stuff, I am now working on collecting at least most of the 25th and 30th. For me its about nostalgia. I prefer old fashioned. I never have been interested in the "latest and greatest". I can identify with Will Smith in I Robot, with him wearing Adidas shoes and driving a gas powered motorcycle in the future.
My wife thinks its a waste of money, but I try to remind her that most guys have a hobby, whether its cars, sports, tools, going to bars etc. This is just what I choose to spend my extra cash on. Plus she seems to buy every candle and picture frame she can for the house. She says its "for the house" but I see it as "her hobby". |
