Most ME carded are not, but there are cases where vintage carded are not as expensive as ME. When you look at loose, there are many ME complete that are more expensive than vintage. This is what I was referring to above.

I love both my vintage and ME collection and I do wish we were still getting some new yearly o-ring figures from the club in addition to the continuation of them doing the ME and 12" figures. The problem before with what the club was offering back when they were still doing o-ring figures is they were mostly direct repaints or slight variations of figures/characters we already had (crimson deco vipers/baroness/twins instead of blue and black, Zarana in a purple top instead of pink, Gristle in green and black, etc. There was nothing wrong with any of these figures specifically but they were mostly just o-ring variations on things that already existed in o-ring and thus not that exciting. On the other hand when they made a figure like Big Lob who was a classic character that never had an o-ring figure they had a hit that still demands a premium on the secondary market. I'd love to see the club go back and invest in giving us o-ring figures we never got in o-ring form before like Billy, Pythona, Hector Ramirez, Kamikura, Hard/Soft/Blind Master, Bombstrike, the Plague, Lt. Stone, Wade Collins, Ronin, etc. etc. Now obviously the club would need to make a profit and I can't speak on their behalf financially or quote specifics on costs versus demand, but it does seem like there would be an audience for this (likely as big or bigger than any 12" audience). They just need to be sure to give us things to get excited about like characters that were never part of our o-ring collections and not just more unrequested variation on characters already produced in o-ring form

The o rings offered in the stores in the 2004 era were also made of a different, softer plastic. Yes they were o ring construction, but the heads looked more modern. I always thought they did not seemlessly blend with the vintage o ring figures due to this difference in appearance. It was cool to get some previously unreleased figures though.

If the Joes today still have o-rings and look like vintage Joes, I would never have started collecting toys in the first place.

I cringe a little when folks extol the virtues of the articulation in the ME figs. The 25th line was plagued for years by diaper crotch figs and Duke arms where a fig couldn't bend their arms to 90 deg. All ARAH could do that and they could all sit which is why I was initially really bummed out by the 25th line. Even though the articulation did get better there were still what I would call form over function problems. Snowjob looks like a cool fig, but for him and many figs like him, the bulk of his jacket means he will never hold a weapon with two hands.
In the end, to each his own. I love both for different reasons, which probably sounds weird, but then again, I'm probably a little weird... |

I like ME better. For me it boils down to:
This next thing is not on my list, but another point to consider. While some vintage items are extremely valuable, I have seen several ME command huge returns. The age of vintage makes them more valuable, but who is to say ME won't go for huge amounts in 30+years, plus some ME are currently out performing vintage counterparts on the secondary market. I remember when many Star Wars POTF2 figures commanded large $$$ on the secondary market. I remember the same thing about Spawn figures as well. I'm not saying it won't happen, but if I am looking for an investment I'll look elsewhere than action figures. That said, ME prices are ridiculous and quite frankly ruined collecting them for me. It isn't that I can't afford them, it is that I cannot justify paying that much for something brand new.

Not only age makes items increase in price but escarcity. The only outlet right now for ME Joes are the FSS and the convention exclusives. They are produced in low runs unlike vintage figures which were produced in mass for the thousands and scattered all over the world.

And as someone said, action figures is not the best commodity to invest your money, so time will tell us if those inflated prices was the real price or only a mirage although my personal thought is ME Joes collections will be liquidated in the future by a fraction of their original prices. Mark my words. |
