I agree that the Vintage figures are way better overall, in my opinion. However, the original poster chose some odd points in which to argue this opinion.
However, I see more collectors, yet again, talking about the vintage figures as if they are some kind of ancient artifact recently pulled from King Tut's tomb. They speak as if one slight breeze will cause the vintage figures to crumble to dust. Come on, man. Aside from the '82 line, some international variants, and a handful of outliers, this just isn't the case. I have 100's of vintage figures out on display, and year after year they are doing FINE. They look good and they aren't falling apart. With all that said, I can certainly see the appeal of the modern figures (not for me, personally, though). I can certainly also understand, for those collectors who already have nearly every damn vintage figure made, the desire for them to keep their hobby alive and see the ME figures as an outlet to do just that. |

Patricio, I really have no arguments or issues with your opinions. I am mostly a Modern Era collector. The reason I say "mostly" is because there are still some vintage figures that I'm looking for. However, the main reason I'm looking for those vintage figures is simply because they haven't been made in the Modern Era format. I'm mainly talking about the Star Brigade lineup.

When I got back into collecting, I started with the ME figures and they are really good and filled in some characters I always wanted, Dr. Venom, Pythona, Kwinn etc... but G.I. Joe is also as much about the vehicles and playsets to me and that is why I stopped the ME and went back to 80's ARAH. Flagg, Whale, Hydrofoil, Terrordrome etc... are all important parts of the line and that is where the ME falls short for me. Plus there is the nostalgia part of my brain that pushed me toward vintage too.
I do not discard the idea of purchasing ME figures but only as troop builders for figures whose price in the o-ring version have excessively increased in the last years. Snow Serpent for instance is a very expensive troop builder but very affordable in the ME version so my route in one o-ring as the leader of the troop and ME for the troop itself. |

I go 50/50. Vintage vehicles are superior to ME because...well...the concept from Hasbro in 82 was a vehicle line with figures as an incentive...so the vehicles were meant to be the centerpiece (and still are in my opinion). I grew up with the O-rings but there are three absolutes that O-Ring figures have as a flaw: (IMO)
1) Even kept MOC, 95% of all Joe figure will have disintegrating o-rings and fall apart on their own, needing repair at least 3 times during a collectors lifetime (and yes, MOC too..none are safe) so even MOC collectors will eventually see there figures fall apart in the package. 2) It has become harder and harder to find O-rings in mint or near mint condition and their prices on the secondary market reflect that compared to relative ease and access of mint ME figures. 3) Display of O-rings shorten their life span and therefore most will be stored away in bins, unseen and therefore, worthless to me. (this refers to disintegrating feet, yellowing, crotches and the aforementioned O-ring issue. ME figures are much more durable and easily replaceable. I have 80% of the 82-94 ARAH vehicles and playlets and will never part with them. I sold off the 230 82-94 ARAH figures I had about a year ago (about 52% of the available figures) and used the proceeds to buy about 90% of the ME releases including convention and con exclusives. Bottom line, articulation on ME is better. Detail and weaponry is better than O-Ring figures and poses achieved with ME are far superior over all. I will always have a soft spot for O-rings but they no longer have a spot on my display shelves.

If you actually did some research, you'd see that the newer 25th-ME figures do better than O-rings on eBay. Are you a financial planner?
It's also much easier to customize the ME than O-rings. Are you a customizer?

I need to take my ARAH out their zip lock coffins and display in acrylic case. Heard a lot of horror stories about them being very delicate now that they are going on 4 decades old. Broking thumbs and ankles from simply trying to equip their gear and place on stands to the dreaded Zartan rubber band change.

You're saying that carded ME figs are going for higher prices than carded o-ring figs?

All of my loose figs are mint but I have one strategy in particular that I like to use to keep thumbs from breaking. I have a "show" gun and a "pose" gun. The show gun came with the fig but the pose gun I bought off of eBay and I will trim away some of the plastic on the grip to reduce thumb stress. It works fantastic because you can get a copy of your fig's gun for a couple of bucks at most.

I like ME better. For me it boils down to:
1. Proportions are more accurate. 2. Better features (removable helmets/weapons in holsters, etc...) Some o rings had a removable helmet/hat, but few could have removable weapons. 3. ME has some newer characters never before offered (either new character or never offered in the 80s/90s). True, some vintage figures were never made, but ME is still producing and customs can be made. 4. Vintage figures break thumbs and crotches easier. This next thing is not on my list, but another point to consider. While some vintage items are extremely valuable, I have seen several ME command huge returns. The age of vintage makes them more valuable, but who is to say ME won't go for huge amounts in 30+years, plus some ME are currently out performing vintage counterparts on the secondary market.
