I like to display my collection in different environments and my joe verse is coordinated into different teams that specialize in certain environments. I always found it odd that there are so many artic troopers but very few Desert specialists. So who would be the best desert joes, based on either filecards or appropriate uniforms? I am trying to build an 8 man team. (Note that my universe is ARAH based and I think of any movie verse figures as new characters).
Dusty is obvious. He's going to the the operations sergeant and 2nd in command. So I need a team leader and six others. For fun, here is the mission: Intelligence reports that Cobra has been supplying advanced weaponory to several militant factions in a region of the Middle East. Hawk wants to send a team to investigate and verify the reports. Who do you send? |

The only other figure I can think of is Night Fox. He is the POC AWE driver. A lot of the ROC figures have Desert Camo too.

Yeah. Night fox is a good one. I'll also make customs of characters that aren't in modern format if it makes sense to add them. Skidmark is a possibility, but I hate that name. I'm thinking of adding Spearhead also.

Team leader I would say Grid-Iron. Maybe Rapid-Fire. I see Yellow outfits as just "should have been Desert camo". Rapid-Fire is an open book. DESERT PARATROOPER FLINT is another option?
Ambush, Recoil, Spearhead, RocknRoll version 2, Repeater all look the part. Skidmark and Sandstorm are Desert specialists. Crank-Case has Desert Warfare training (one of the few) so does Snake-Eyes, Doc.

This is my Desert Squad line up :
General Rey (Commanding officer) Dusty (2nd In Command) Longrange (Sigma 6, Sniper and Driver) Ambush Doc (I'm using Carla "Doc") Spearhead (Point man) Sandstorm Wreckage Wreckage is the only one i would really swap, he's a jungle specialist. But i really liked the way he turned out with an MTF desert body. |

Wasn't there a 5 or 6 pack of POC figures in desert camo?
You also had ROC Duke and Ripcord in desert gear.

I actually never thought about Sigma Six Lone Range. It looks like there was a version of him with "desert gear". He's a good candidate for a sniper role and he would be an interesting custom to make. I guess there is also Sigma Desert Wolf, but I can't bring myself to have both a "Desert Wolf" and a "Night Fox" on the same team.
I didn't realize Footloose specifically listed desert training in his filecard. Thanks for the tip. |

The Beachhead from the Retaliation 3-pack appears to be in desert colors. I use him as a desert figure in my setups.
PoC Zartan's disguise looks pretty good with desert Joes as well, and you get the added drama of a traitor in your ranks. If you can score that expensive Fem-Dialtone set, there's a good chunk of desert troops in there. |
