I played with G.I. Joe when I was a child, my childhood and playing years developed between the glorious 1982-1989 years, and although my mother was always under a budget to buy me toys I met the best of the toy line owning the toys, browsing stores and enjoying my friends toys as well.
After so many years of relentless adult life (two college degrees, several jobs, one divorce and raising two little girls with mom's help) I have decided to take a breath and now that my girls are getting slowly to the independence that teenage years provide I am now returning to those things that make my childhood the best time of my life: G.I. Joe. This passion is something that only those that lived it can understand it. You cannot find G.I. Joe on retail stores anymore in my country, however one day I visited a toy store (I always kept myself visiting toy stores for one reason or another, looked at the toys, enjoyed watching them and then moved to my adult life again) then I met a group of military action figures with several vehicles next to them. They were "The Corps!" and although evidently they were not G.I. Joe, they resurrected inside me the emotion I felt when I looked at G.I. Joe toys in the toy stores I visited in my childhood. I moved again to my adult life as always happened after a toy store visit, but I already was in love and sooner than later I returned to the store and after more than 25 years from the day I bought my last toy I was again taking a bunch of action figures and a large vehicle to home. I enjoyed unboxing the toys and after several days thinking in how to start playing again (I guess I was rusty after so many years) I finally took they toys to a table I started an adventure as the old good times. I confess I felt a bid weird at the beginning and spoke by the characters quietly so my mom did not listen to me (that would be embarrasing) after some minutes I was so immersed in the adventure that I forgot about the weirdness it felt in the beginning and I was a 10 years old boy again, living a military adventure again. Some weeks later I am in a downward spiral and there is no turning back. I started chasing and hunting on ebay the toys I owned in my childhood and those that belonged to my friends or just those I saw in the toy store but mom could not buy for me because of being out of the budget. Now I play frequently and since I usually play with my girls (their boring barbies and ponys of course) they do not feel their dad is crazy when they see me playing with my action figures. I feel more alive than ever before, not only for recovering a passion society told me was not something for adults but for finding a hobby that allows me an unusual scapism form: returning to childhood, the time of your life when nothing can go wrong. Are there others like me? Do you still play with your Joes making voices and forging an adventure from your mind? I have seen videos of adults playing with toys but most of them look overacted (for not to say the look like morons), they do not play like an intelligent 10 years old boy would play, so I think an adult would play even more intelligently. What is your experience? Do you still play like you did in your childhood? How do you play? |

I loved playing with joes as a kid.
Sadly I have tried, but just cant play with them as an adult. I am now into displaying them and getting that perfect stance just right.

Pretty much where I'm at too. I love posing and displaying them. I do love the functionality and playability of some of the toys, though, and when ever possible, I have two of a particular toy, say a vehicle, where I can display it one way and then have it displayed another way to sort of show the functionality of that particular piece. (The MMS comes to mind - I'll display it as if it's ready to fire, and I'll also display one being towed.)

Mostly just pose them now.
The two methods of play I remember most fondly, are me and my brother taking the Joes and Cobra, get them set up, and take turns moving our army, using a laser pointer to take shots, using the Incinerators catapult to make grenade throws, a CD replicates the explosion. And of course, ninjas use their swords/ect. And our much less creative, much worse for our figures game, was to set up a few figures on a nearby dirt hill, throw rocks to the top of the hill and watch the figures survive the landslide. Kinda regret this game when I look at some of the scratches on my older figures. Both games were fun as a kid though. I kinda miss them, but I'm a little too full of myself to play these days if an actual child isn't involved. |

This thread is very fascinating. Do we forget to play as adults? Is there something that we lose as children that prevents this type of play? Anyone who cannot play with toys as an adult, do you have children? Have you tried playing with toys with your kids? Utterly fascinating. Is it sociological or psychological that prevents it?
Those that do pose and display do you consider the posing some form of play? You are handling them in a way but no rough play so to speak. |

I do play with my figures, so to speak, but I don't really act out adventures or battles any more. I typically just get out a couple of figures and maybe a vehicle, and just sort of goof around with them. Equip them, pose them, that sort of thing. Sometimes I get a bunch of them out at once and set them up in scenes which could represent a snapshot from a battle or adventure. Anything I put "on display" usually gets put away after a few days to make way for whatever I want to have fun with next.
I do still enjoy firing spring-loaded missiles at stuff, though. Gimmicky or not, it's gratifying to hit a target. And yeah, I'll hold a jet and make "whoosh whoosh" noises as I "fly" it around.

I display my figures on shelves . I'll occasionally "play" with the vehicles and a few figures on my own by pushing them around or flying them.
And now that I have a niece that's old enough , who loves figures and G I Joe...I play with her by creating battles and making all the sound effects etc. Haha We use the missiles and guns that fire, figures, and vehicles. Its fun to enjoy them with her. A new generation of G I Joe fan! Her favorite is Cobra... "You don't stop playing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop playing." |
