I think this whole poll would look a lot different had JJ read the comics in the eighties.

How about if more people had watched the '80s cartoons? A lot of people seem unfamiliar with the characters the cartoon introduced outside of the more widely seen 1987 movie.
I read the first 70 issues or so of the comic. This is less about the comics than it is about the era. The end of the Sunbow series coincided with the end of the golden age of G.I. Joe. The comic reached issue #70 around that time. 1988 was the start of rapidly diminishing returns for the brand. Much of what happened after that matters little to even big G.I. Joe fans. That's why this poll's participation rate has plummeted since its inception. Bottom line, anyone who thinks a poorly conceived, undeveloped figure from the 2000s that is a knock-off of two previous characters has any basis to compete with a strong, speaking, supporting character from the very first Sunbow mini-series doesn't have a CLUE about what made G.I. Joe great. G.I. Joe is not great because some bozo thought it was a good idea to rename Jinx with an already-used code name...twice...and give both of her a cheap, cheesy, shallow backstory. On the other hand, we have a character who played a major role in Snake-Eyes' biggest storyline on the smash hit cartoon at a very early time in Joe history when Snake-Eyes was just becoming a break-out star of a character. THAT is a character who played a part in making G.I. Joe great. Last edited by JediJones; 03-20-2017 at 10:48 PM.. |

Bazooka, Chuckles and Covergirl tied for 41.
I think there was one other instance of a threeway as well, but i'm not hunting for it. Short answer yes. |

Quote:
This poll is not about "what character most contributed to making the G.I. Joe Brand Great" It is about what is the "Greatest character". Yes. Many of the greatest characters (Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, etc) did both. But others who are highly ranked (Shockwave, Dr. Venom, and others) had great arcs that defined who THEY were as characters, but likely wouldn't be recognized by many more casual fans. That argument fundamentally ignores the point of what this poll is about. [On this particular point I agree, Vypra twins have no business competing with anyone of the comic or sunbow characters in the poll as far as I'm concerned, but this does illustrate how "figure trumps all" really has mis-aligned this poll all the way along.] |
