Given that Army Rangers wore black berets when Stalker was created, and not green, do you think it was a conscious move by Hasbro to NOT make a toy of a black man wearing a black beret because of the political/social connection to the 'Black Panthers'?
My apologies if this was already covered in another thread. Thanks, Jason |

I'm not the historian or comic authority some folks here are, but I always assumed he was an actual Green Beret. His primary and secondary specialties are infantry and medic, respectively, just like Falcon, and both have extensive language skills noted...all of which are useful to SF troops. It also fits with his being on LRRP teams with Snake Eyes, SS, etc. in Vietnam.

Hama's history of Stalker is that he was a LRRP in Vietnam. LRRP units were later designated LRP and later redesignated as Ranger companies, not the same as the modern 75th Ranger Regiment, which came later. Stalker's original beret design was not green but tiger-striped like his uniform. Look at his card art. LRPs sometimes wore tiger-striped berets. The green beret of the actual figure was probably a cost-saving decision or manufacturing mistake.

I believe that Stalker was an inspiration from Tiger Force Recon, 1/327 Inf., 101st Airborne Division. If you go by the original card art you'll notice that his beret was also the same as his uniform. I think that the figure did not reflect this because of production issues for airbrushing the beret to match the uniform was too difficult at the time so it was easier to make it solid green, giving the impression he was a green beret. The unit mentioned above was heavily involved in LRRP missions and this is the camo they used and some men chose to wear tiger stripe berets others Boone hats. Also many of these guys were (ranger qualified). I hope this helps shed some light on stalker.
You have to remember that when GI JOE was reimagined in the early 80's some of the designers were Vietnam vets and the took their queues from that era. The biggest example of that is the red white and blue stripe on the GI JOE logo. That's not exactly representing the flag colors. Its actually the banner used by the 3rd Mobile Strike Force in Vietnam. GI JOE was a mobile strike force during the first two years before that part was removed from the card backs. Quote:

I seem to remember reading somewhere that some of the Navy SEALS wore camo or tiger-stripe berets in 'Nam.

And Rangers now wear tan. They weren't real pleased when the Army decided to put everyone in black berets.

If I'm not mistaken, the toys (at least, the 82 wave) were designed before Larry Hama came on board to write the filecards. There are a number of instances were the toy designer's intent and Larry's interpretation don't match.

Your correct they indeed wore tiger stripe and even with dungarees. It's also important to remember that the tiger stripe berets were Not a specific unit, just a camo cover for jungle ops
