$9.99 for THAT on eBay!?

Hey guys I'm seeking some advice on trading for expensive items. I've traded before over the internet with people on eBay using eBay feedback as a way of trusting people and never had an issue. Usually the person who initiated the trade sent the stuff first and then it went from there but truthfully it was never really over $50 or so in value.
I recently attempted to trade my vintage Vinyl Caped Jawa for a carded Cobra de Aço. Although, in the end, it didn't happen. But while it was still a possibility, I started to wonder how I would send an item possibly valued around $1200-$1500 for another high priced item. Obviously, I didn't want to get ripped off but I also wanted the other guy to trust me as well. How do you guys do high priced trades with people you can't meet in person? |

I would not recommend trading for high priced item with people you dont know. It is just not worth the risk. So much can go wrong and you have no protection.
Sell your item and then buy his on ebay. I know fees suck, but its worth the protection for an item priced that high. This is just my personal feeling. Or just pay using pay pal goods and services and have him do the same. I think they will protect you. Make sure to get tons of photos of what you are getting. |

I have done a handful of deals like this. It usually takes a few weeks or months to finalize the deal and get comfortable with the other party. I like to see feedback from deals on other sites and sometimes actually speak to the person over the phone. So far, I have not been burned. I also purchased a guy's G1 Transformers collection for $500 after he posted it for sale on the Tank. He was brand new to the Tank, but he had made several deals involving firearms on a site and also had ebay history. The guy was former military and I basically just trusted my gut. You just have to be comfortable with the other party, but in the back of your mind always be prepared to get screwed. Any deal like this involves taking a calculated risk. However, it can be a great way to pick up expensive items at a discount.

Thanks guys! Most likely I'll end up going the eBay route and just turn around the money in the end but every once in a while something like this comes along. As you all know eBay can be a crapshoot. I dread putting up something of high value wanting, say, $1500. Willing to settle for $1200 but in the end, for whatever reason, getting $700. I know the item is only worth what you actually get for it so that is why I'd prefer to trade high valued items.
I've become much more cautious with this since seeing more and more horror stories about getting ripped off. I've even see the warnings about well known toy dealers switching out items sent to them and returning a fake or lesser grade items stating they aren't interested in a trade or sale of the item. My uncle is a stamp collector and this is a huge issue for him. He has dealt with shadiness so much over the years that he is no longer buying stamps. |

It's like anything else brother just know who you're getting involved with. I've done high end trades with that the same issues as well as low end trades be it on here, eBay or in person. I have had many deals turn out less than great and others better than expected. I think for the most part we have a decent system here on the tank and I feel comfortable enough to make almost any trade regardless of value.

And Craigslist? Don't get me started. Sure there is the occasional deal but mostly I find over priced junk piles. Everyone thinks that their toy pile from the 80s is an investment piece. Years ago I lived in Boise ID and the local news had a story on action figure collecting and one guy they interviewed said "If you still have your Star Wars figures from when you were a kid, you're rich!" |

Sadly, that seems to be the case more often than not (price evaluation).
Sites like Buzzfeed post jazz like "If you still have these (insert 80s property here), you're rich" articles and people fall for them hook, line & sinker. As for the trade scenario, I echo what others have noted - Use common sense, research your trade partner and cover yourself as much as possible, be it via insurance or other means. |
