It should be less work because no percentages have to be calculated. 5% will effectively be dead as the poll isn't getting back to 40 votes.
Moving the threshold for staying in from about 7 votes to 10 (or now 14 to 20) isn't a sea change but would help filter a higher portion of stinkers out who are taking up space and keeping the poll stale. We'd then be likely to be dropping 1 more character for every 2 being dropped now. Given that the 10-poll waiting period is likely to increase the time stinkers spend in the poll, counter-balancing that with tougher requirements for them staying in would be a helpful move. Making it easier for stinkers to stay in the poll longer doesn't improve the quality of the poll. Now we have a scenario where after 10 polls a stinker can barely pass with the majority of votes being from the guy who nominated him and then we can't get rid of him for another 10 polls. I've always felt that a new candidate should have at least 10 polls to prove his worth anyway, and making it harder to stay in the poll is counterproductive. By requiring 20 votes when the average vote total is now 24 essentially raises the threshold from 5 to 8.5%. That's way too much. Most occupants wouldn't meet that threshold. The third highest placing candidate barely gets 13%. The fourth gets 8 or less. Raising the threshold just compels voters to focus on saving potential dropees instead of picking their first choice. Besides dropping more people just sucks in nominees that may have been just sitting at the top of the list. I raised the noms from 2 to 3 to help get new faces in faster. But raising the rate of drops works against that because historically people just keep nominating a character once he drops to get him back in instead of using those nominations on a different character. Our nominative system is inherently wasteful and inefficient. I want to fix it, not add to it.

I've been tracking the numbers in a spreadsheet since I started and there's a good reason why I dropped the threshold from 6 to 5%. There were way too many drops to begin with and characters weren't even coming close to "warming" the poll once the drop system was implemented. Here are some stats:
The poll winner typically takes 29% of the votes. Second place takes 21% Third place takes 13% As you can see, the top three take 63% of the votes. That means the remaining seven share 37% of the votes. Divide 37% by 7 characters and you have about 5% per character. I'm not going to drop 70% of the poll. |

You know who's been in the poll the longest right now? Joe Canuck with 23 polls. Dawn has been in the second longest with 16 polls. Both earn a high average. Others don't even come close. There's absolutely no reason to drop more characters. In fact, I suspect the 10-round drop zone may see a slight increase in drops because people pay less attention to a potential dropee until he's in the zone, but at 10 instead of 5, it will be much harder to "save" a character that has been ignored for 9 rounds.
