There was a lot I liked about having an official GI Joe Club- product and conventions mainly, but I never felt the organization was run well and many of the decisions by leadership at the Club were questionable at best and borderline “shady” in other instances. I think they did more to alienate fans at times than they did to grow the community. That being said, I would welcome a new Club with new leadership. Mark, if you went back to Hasbro on the Joe brand, would you consider creating an in house Club or licensing it out to another entity? If you didn’t return to Hasbro, would you consider running such a Club yourself? You are the Marketer, so I don’t need to tell you the value of having such a tool as an official Club or Convention and I would hate for Joe to lose that or the tremendous asset that you are.

As a guy with an MBA in marketing, I have concerns about a direction for GI Joe to be a focus of. Without getting into the political aspects of ARAH as the posts above have done, I wonder about the Hasbro approach or need to go global with an action figure brand for these reasons....
1) The changing of American children and their play patterns, with age and action figures versus digital entertainment (video games, phones, etc). However, it was encouraging to see that with the right property driving demand (Fortnight) action toys can sell physical product that kids want to play with or collect. 2) What kind of world demand is there by children for military toys? I mean every country (or most) has their own military, but how many have a military culture and the sheer number of veterans and veterans kids as America does? I tried to get in the army myself but was 4-f'd, and I have the utmost respect for those we send into harm's way (regardless of my feelings for the politicians who use them as chips on a board). Is there tons of demand for military toys by say Japanese children, or Thai children, or Indian children. I, for example, loved in 2010 while visiting China to pick up Chinese PLA style "Power Team Elite" soldiers and bring them home, as you couldn't find them elsewhere (and as I later heard were forced to discontinue by a General in the PLA). Perhaps if the figures were of "their" military (say a German GSG9 force, a British SAS force, or an India Commando team. etc), but an international force of mostly personnel from Western military countries. Is it that appealing? Since the movie's pushed it to become an international force. I am curious about sales and attention paid to JOE outside the US border. Mark, was this something that was researched or looked at during your time there? |

As far as the digital companion that was mentioned, Mark, during your time at Hasbro was there ever any mention of pairing a figure line with the mobile game G.I. Joe Battleground?
I know the game was pretty popular with the fan base and had amazing artwork. I feel like an opportunity may have been missed there. Your thoughts on that? Quote:
Valla's doing a 6" line and I think that's where he has his heart set...higher profits from basically the same amount of work. I can't say I blame him, but I won't be buying anything from his line. It's 1:18 or smaller for me, period.
My larger issue overall is that I don't know who worked on which specific releases so I can't really picture the "dream team." For example, Weber just said the 50th MASS Device set was released under his watch, but was already in the pipeline by the time he got there. So who authorized or planned which specific figures/sets? Can someone please lay out a timeline with the Joe leads and designers on it (for the modern era)? Or does anyone really even know for sure? I was far more involved in the 2016 line - particularly proud of Sightline, Shooter, Stiletto, and the female Cobra Officer. 2017 didn't have much product, but I worked on the Cobra Missile Command Center (with Bobby Vala) and the Hasbro Revolutions SDCC set. Mark, thanks for taking the time to answer all of our questions!
What are your thoughts on HasLab and it’s future? Does Hasbro consider the Barge project a huge success and hope to build on that? Would it surprise you to see a G.I. Joe related HasLab project?

What a great discussion, and very much an on the record job interview.
Fascinating. Bring all the molds to Mexico, this way you can have Just in Time Delivery and no pegwarmers. Plus much faster iterations, especially with a prepaid model. Marauder John should do the same, his WWII line will make him a very wealthy man, but logistics will be a genuine bottleneck. Maybe you should go work for him, he is already having very real fulfillment issues due to incredible sales volumes. 3 weeks backlog and half of his catalog is completely sold out (it appears). Chuckles, I think you make a lot of good points. As I understood it, G.I. Joe didn't have any budget for market research from the Global Consumer Insights team during my time on the brand. I assume it would have gotten some had we moved closer to an actual movie release date.
