Thought I would post this here because my wife feels the same way about "violent" toys. When she mentions this to my parents, they ask her "Does your husband seem violent?" reminding her that I grew up playing with GI Joe and still like to buy GI Joe for our 4 year olds but face resistance because there are guns and missiles. I circumvent the violent argument by telling my wife and kids that the guns shoot pretend bubbles not pretend bullets.
Ban War Toys: The '''80s Anti-War Movement Driven By G.I. Joe Has nice video of GI Joe commercial I do not recall seeing before. Last edited by blhx; 11-03-2016 at 02:05 PM.. |

This is what I don't understand... kids like Pokemon, Transformers and Marvel superheroes.
You collect Pokemon to do battle with others. Transformers is just as violent. Seeing people vaporized in the 3rd movie was not violent? Marvel Superhero movies, thousands of people are killed while these guys do battle with one another. Yes, GI Joe has guns... but does anyone actually watch the cartoons? Read the comics? See the movies? A LOT less death than Transformers and the Marvel movies. I think people hear the words GI Joe and just knee jerk. They have no basis in fact to condemn them.

Make G.I. Joe great again!
There is definitely a knee-jerk anti-gun sentiment out there. It's not about the violence. It's all about the guns. Post-Columbine effect? There's also a little bit of something in some moms who are "afraid" their kids will grow up and join the military. |

When I was very young, my stepfather used to hate my star wars figures because he thought they were all about fighting and killing and against god. When he finally saw the movies on VHS tape, he changed his mind, believing the Force was a stand in for religion.
I just let him think whatever he wanted so long as I could still play with my toys.

Pokemon's catch phrase is " gotta catch 'em all"; does that promote slavery?

I remember reading a story about a woman who got irritated with her son's toys all being violent. she gave him some nuts and bolts to play with or something similar. When she came back, she discovered the son was using the nuts as a brave, noble force battling the evil bolts.
kids play 'war' with anything they want if they want. |

Over the years, I've heard a mom or two on a toy aisle with their son say "No war toys."
Batman is a violent vigilante. Most super-heroes are. As are the Ninja Turtles. Those people were mad because they could no longer had complete power over how to indoctrinate children. They didn't want a free market; they wanted control. |

I have daughters, and tend to run into other parents who are against their daughters watching Disney movies, as it gives them an unrealistic expectation of thinking they can be princesses, or that they will grow up thinking they need a man to rescue them. But if all this is true, where's all the GI Joe- loving murderers and women pretending to be princesses?
GI Joe doesn't lead to violence. apparently it leads to grown ass men paying hundreds of dollars for toys. Who knows which is worse. |

There's no way "War Toys" sales increased 350% in that period unless they were not counting "Star Wars" toys in the previous period.
So war is okay in Space? You know what a Death Star does?? |

Bring peace love and harmony to a galaxy ruled by conflict?
At least that's what the pamphlet says.
