Many Joe figures and vehicles have some very baffling design and color choices. But could their be an in universe explanations? Some ideas I have are:
The general: with the wide spread use of compound z, a base of operations was needed to operate in infested areas. The general has automated guns down low, and maned guns higher up and out of reach of a zombie hoard. The cockpit is armored as uposed to glass to prevent intrusion. Most missiles face horizontal to fire into advancing hoards, and the cannon is used to decimate an advancing hoard before it ever gets in range of the gunners. The red night vipers: They patrol cobra island at night along with trouble bubbles. The red is there for quick identification by the trouble bubbles that are equipped with spotlights, as any infiltrator wouldn't be dumd enough to walk around Cobra island shining a flashlight. Techno vipers: Bats need to be serviced in combat from time to time, and having them kill the technicians just won't do, so the Bats are programed to not attack the color purple. This is obviously highly classified by Cobra. This also explains the Toxo Vipers colors, as Bats and Toxo Vipers are some of the only troops that could be sent in after a Cobra chemical or biological attack. Sound attack Lampreys: these work in freezing water, where the danger is more hypothermia, rather than being spotted, hence the orange, high vis uniforms. More of a survival suit than anything. Anyone else have any creative ideas? This could be a great topic, and give a new use to some of the stranger Joe designs and color choices. Last edited by viper2382; 10-06-2016 at 02:51 AM.. |

The explanation for the red Night Vipers is about as good as anything I can come up with. I realize they wouldn't want to do green 2 waves in a row, but red? I mean, yeah, it looks cool, but seems counterproductive. Deep blue? Too cliche. Dark gray? Kid's stuff. Bold red? HELL YES, apparently.
The Techno-Viper explanation is not a bad one as well, especially since it ties in with the Toxo-Viper (and could even explain the somewhat reviled Battle Corps Viper, which was released just a couple years after BAT 2.0 and around the time of the Star Brigade BAAT). As for Sonic Fighter Lampreys? I never gave it any thought, but it does kind of make sense, seeing as how life vests are also bright orange. Quick, someone explain Captain Grid-Iron! (That's the 2nd time in 3 days I've brought him up, for some reason.)

Captain Grid Iron At first glance Captain Terrence Lydon's resume seems pretty solid. Top 10 at West Point? Check. Passed over appointment at U.S. Army War College to get in on the real action? Check. Took the code name Grid Iron and wears battle gear specifically designed to remind everyone that he was the quarterback of the West Point football team like a decade ago? Check fucking plus. That's right, Grid Iron's entire gimmick is letting people know how awesome he used to be at football. This somehow translates into success on the battlefield. ...Yeah, this can't miss. It's like if Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite had the lives of actual soldiers resting under his whim. Most Telling Quote From File Card: "If he would only stop trying so hard to be likable . . . they might let him play quarterback at the annual G.I. Joe Fish Fry Football Game!" That's right -- the Joes don't even let him play football. Pathetic Weapon of Choice: Football-shaped grenades. Outfitted as he is, it's only a matter of time before Grid Iron relapses into his glory days, drops back in the pocket and fires one deep to an unwitting Duke or Scarlett, giving the surviving Joes yet another reason to hate his guts. Crowning Moment (of Ignominy): Umm... After leading the Joes to victory in a Cobra/G.I. Joe football game against the comically inept Range-Viper, Grid Iron rescues Sergeant Slaughter, flirts with Lady Jaye and destroys half the Cobra armada. As a reward for a hard day's work, Lady Jaye invites him to the uber-exclusive Studio 55, where he shows up in the same ridiculous football-themed outfit he wore all day. Let it go man, let it go. To be fair, other than the facemask on his helmet and the football-shaped bombs, Gridiron is fairly standard in his equipment, and one of the more, relatively, realistic figures from that time period. You can easily explain the facemask as a replacement for typical riot-gear-style facemasks. Perhaps, as a former football player, he kept helmets, and he switched out the facemasks as a simple preference that also displays his passions. Also, the shape of the footballs may be a coincidence he seized on, hence prompting him to paint lacing on the grenades as a sort of in-joke. Fairly standard. You see flight crews paint messages and teeth or faces on bombs all the time.

I always figured that maybe the Joe team was on somebody's shit list. The team being formed made it that somebody else's pet project didn't get green lighted or something, or maybe the pentagon didn't really see cobra as that much of a threat or whatever. As a result they had problems with funding and getting stuff through the regular supply chain, so they ended up with the stuff nobody else wanted, the vehicles and weird concept shit was submitted for testing and rejected for one reason or another. Where do those test samples go? Into the Joe motor pool.

The Saw vipers: They work in Springfield and other Cobra controled towns. If rioting breaks out, Alley Vipers move in to quell the riot by conventional means. (Tear gas, arrests etc) If the Alley Vipers can not end the riot, Saw Vipers are sent in. They are highly visible, and the sight of them ready to mow down the rioting crowd usually is enough to disperse the rioters before a shot even has to be fired. Either way, when they are deployed the riot will be over in about ten minutes.

Captain Grid iron: He often trains new recruits on how to accurately place a thrown grenade in pill box slits, tank weak spots, etc. Michael Jordan trained with a larger than regulation ball, the thought being that if he could master sinking a larger ball through the hoop, a regulation size ball would be easy once the time came when it really counts. Grid Iron employs the the same training method. If a trainee can get a larger football shaped grenade through a pill box slit or tank engine cover, with much less tolerance for error than a smaller real grenade (both are weighted the same) then in combat making the throw will be much easier.
