I always thought Dodger from Battleforce 2000 was lifted directly out of the movie Aliens, as was Repeater's waisted mounted machine gun.

Looks like we haven't pinned anything on Zartan yet, but I am going to say the eye makeup probably came from KISS. Zartan may have been more original because all the toy features put in him dictated his wardrobe. He needed a hood to hold on the face mask, he needed some bare skin to show off the sunlight color-changing feature, and he needed the translucent shield pieces to show off the sticker color-change feature. In hindsight this is probably correct, but as a kid I always thought of Alice Cooper when I saw Zartan.

"Zartan's name was created as an anagram of "Tarzan" - the name was given to Larry Hama, he did not create it himself."

Also, as I mentioned in the Hamaverse read-along thread, Kwinn is based on Anthony Quinn in the movie The Savage Innocents.

Marvel's Secret Empire influenced Cobra, like Hydra did. (originally it was funded by Hydra)
"The Secret Empire is a subversive organization concerned with conquering the U.S.A. through surreptitious means such as forming underground armies and engaging in deeply layered conspiracies." "Reorganized by their new Number One, the Secret Empire expanded their inner circle to a Council of Ten, and the thousands of members who comprised the outer circle believed themselves to be merely members of a fraternity. All of the outer circle agents helped prevent the Secret Empire's operations from being traced back to the inner circle. The most extreme members of the outer circle were the Pretorians, a fanatical motorcycle gang of white supremacists led by the maniacal Chainsaw." They even had bikers (this may have been well after the Dreadnoks and Cobra, not sure.) Hooded costumes. If that's not close enough... "Cobra Commander" tangled with Cap and Falcon! Mission: Impossible's masks are definitely a huge influence on the cartoon plots. Right from the beginning with M.A.S.S. Device they had the Baroness infiltrating G.I. Joe with a perfect disguise. They would go back to this device of the characters using perfect disguises frequently, but rarely giving any real explanation for how accurate the disguises were like M:I did.
In a bizarre twist, according to this Wiki, that 1974 CC prototype guy was intended by the writer to be none other than Richard Milhous Nixon. Number One - Marvel Database - Wikia "The letters page of Captain America #175 tried to distance the parallel of Number #1 and President Nixon and his resignation from office. However Steve Englehart has stated his intention was for Number #1 to be the President." Last edited by JediJones; 09-15-2016 at 10:22 PM.. |

Were there any movies with dogfights with modern jets before Top Gun? Top Gun was in 1986 and the dogfight shots look like a shot of the Skystrikers taken out of a Sunbow episode. We might be able to credit G.I. Joe with having battles with this type of hardware first before Top Gun made the idea extremely popular. Top Gun also used code names like Maverick and Goose. Was it common to see pilots or military guys in movies with G.I. Joe-esque code names like that before? It does sound like the Top Gun filmmakers did research and captured authentic details, so this may have been a case of G.I. Joe imitating life a little earlier than Top Gun did.
Other actual code names from Top Gun: Viper (!) Stinger (!) Iceman Jester Cougar Wolfman Slider Merlin Sundown Hollywood Chipper Of course G.I. Joe then borrowed back the name Maverick for their own pilot. I see now that Clint Eastwood had a movie Firefox in 1982 with modern jet dogfights. Blue Thunder had helicopter action scenes in 1983. I wonder why they went with the A-10 Warthog design for the Rattlers. |
