A new 2 inch line would be awesome if the figures were articulated like the mega blocks Call of Duty line. Also, a 6inch line needs to happen.

Oh JEEZ! Where do I begin? Well:
1. GI Joe needs a newly designed kid-focused toy line, as the main line. 2. Need a new scale—6” or 2.5/3” 3. 8" Sigma 6 was great. Better toys than Modern Era. 4. Modern Era is overrated. 5. Resolute cartoon is overrated. 6. Realism in sculpt/design is overrated. 7. Not all ARAH characters need to be remade in Modern Era. 8. 25th Tunnel Rat is a good figure 9. 25th 5-pack Flint is better than 50th Flint. 10. 30th Cobra Trooper is way overrated.

More than any 1980's toy, GI Joe benefited from being in the right place at the right time and the main reason the toy line is not viable now is more of a reflection on how society views the USA and military than a reflection of the quality of the property.

The Sunbow cartoon is THE definitive G.I. Joe, not the comic book. There is no way that the comic book Shipwreck, Flint, Lady Jaye, CC, Serpentor, etc. are more iconic than the portrayals in the cartoon. To the world, Duke is the primary leader of G.I. Joe as he was in Sunbow while he is nothing but a footnote in the comic. While the comic book gives us a better Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow storyline, it has nothing else to offer when it comes to creating a modern bible for G.I. Joe storytelling. Other than SE and SS, all of the characters that broke out into pop culture icons happened because of the Sunbow cartoon, not the comic book.
The cartoon also holds up incredibly well and is rightly considered one of the very best cartoons of the 1980s by all serious studies and surveys. Which is not to say the original comic book is not good. However, any G.I. Joe comic books not written by Hama or part of the Hama-verse are worth less than used toilet paper and should be wiped from history entirely. I completely disagree that G.I. Joe is not viable because of the "era" we're in. If anything, the military is viewed far more positively now than it was in the post-Vietnam era. Just look at the reception to American Sniper vs. all the "critically acclaimed" movies we got about the horrors of Vietnam back in the '80s. And the Cold War threat we faced then (WarGames era) was just as scary as terrorism is now. Terrorist hijackings and bombings were even scary events back then, but that didn't stop them from being villains in Superman, Back to the Future, Die Hard, True Lies, etc. While there is more negativity towards kids "playing with guns" now than there was then, plenty of action figures still seem to come with guns. The lack of popularity of G.I. Joe is ALL about not having the right media tie-in to promote the brand, not about the culture. The original line needed media support and so does the modern one. Cobra-La is GREAT. The more science-fictiony the enemy G.I. Joe has to fight, the better it is. Realistic military good guys vs. crazy science-fiction bad guys is the template to use to make an awesome modern G.I. Joe movie or storyline. Bring on the aliens, zombies, mutants, robots, etc. One group of soldiers with guns, tanks and planes vs. another group of soldiers with guns, tanks and planes makes for a dreadfully boring storyline nowadays. I neither like the horrible-looking Sigma 6 and ROC figures nor the early POC figures. POC/30th didn't get good until they went back to proper, classic, bright colors and faithful costume designs like on the Viper, Cobra Trooper, Crazylegs, Lifeline, Sci-Fi, etc. Their Beach-Head, Firefly, Alley Viper, Dusty, Zartan, Snow Job, Hawk, etc. suck. The Club is a fantastic resource for collectors and I'm thrilled they extended the license. They have given us something like 200 modern figures we wouldn't have gotten otherwise. And there's no question this year that their output is vastly superior to Hasbro's sad efforts. I want a 6" Joe line NOW. A remade Mainframe should be at the top of the ME want list. The first 25th Shipwreck and Mainframe were godawful representations of classic figures. Shipwreck got an amazing update in the 5-pack but Mainframe remains a forgotten failure. I have seen campaigns to get figures like Dial-Tone remade who need it far less than Mainframe. Last edited by JediJones; 09-05-2016 at 12:03 PM.. |

I don't like the bulkier/taller sculpts used on RockBlock, Gung-ho, Leatherneck and Repeater. Way too big.
Never saw the need/attraction of having Sgt Slaughter on the team. |

I prefer vintage o-ring ARAH over modern.
I don't consider collector club exclusive characters "canon". The Marvel comic was excellent for the first 50 issues, good for the next 50 and barely readable by the end. The original Cobra Commander should've stayed "dead" in Marvel. Firefly, too. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow are not only over exposed but boring at this point. Once you've gotten the hard master story out of the way, what is there to do with Storm Shadow? Hasbro/Hama had him leave Cobra. Great. Then Hasbro mucked that up around 2000 by putting him back in Cobra. Night Force is overrated. Putting the Joes all in black/dark colors is uninteresting. I prefer vintage Python Patrol colors over the 2003 versions. I really have no interest in any scale beside 3 3/4". I think a 6" GI JOE line wouldn't last more than a year, because there's only a handful of characters that casual fans would buy at $20 a figure. Last edited by Sean_C; 09-05-2016 at 01:26 PM.. |

The Flagg is a glorified landing strip. The Defiant, Terrordrome & even the General had much more playability.
The Sunbow synicated cartoon wasn't all that. While it had its own issues, the '87 movie was the best we got in terms of story, animation & voice acting. We need a Cobra-La vs BF2000 con set. The '89/'90 years are neck & neck with '85/'86 years for the 2 best years for Joe toys. The Marvel comic run was pretty solid until issue 130 or so. im with you on both of these. 6inch or any other scale would kill long time fans. Plus Marvel Legends and half of the current SW Black Series are keeping those pegs so warm they are practically on fire.
