I was in Toys R Us the other day and saw the Barbie dream house being purchased for some lucky little girl. For those of you that don't know, the Barbie dream house retails for about $200.00. The thought crossed my mind, "why isn't (or wasn't) the Flagg carried, as a staple product, all year, every year, like Mattel puts out the Barbie dream house"?
There are certain toys, like the Flagg and Masters of the Universe Castle Greyskull, that were amazing, back in the day, and are still iconic. Why don't "boys toys" have their own version of the Barbie dream house, & why isn't it the U.S.S. Flagg? |

Hmm.
Does the house change over the decades to reflect architecture? Barbie herself is a perpetual, iconic, brand that has lasted generations. She and all her friends will always need a house. GIJOE on the other hand, while lasting decades, just does not have the same brand recognition. On the plus side, you get a Vader, a Duke, A Captain America every few years. In other words. Barbie has core products just like GIJOE, GIJOE just happens to be figures and not vehicles/accessories/playsets. I think an exception would be the Millennium Falcon which is trotted out every few years.

Are you asking for a new aircraft carrier every year? It's never going to happen. Barbie has the sales to support her own aisle. Joe hasn't been able to do that since the 80's, if it ever happened. We could have had a a few years of the ROC PITT getting revamped as different Joe and Cobra variants, but the first one failed at the $200 price point. The only way to get a Flagg at that price is as a tower and vinyl mat or those foam mats the go under exercise equipment. We couldn't even get decent sales on the 30th Skystriker at full price.

I'm certain the Dream House has changed many times over the years...here are some examples...
A Look Back at Barbie's Dreamhouse - Barbie's Dreamhouse Through the Years But It think the answer to the question is the DH is generally a pretty simple design of plastic levels supported by columns not always but its generally a very simple designed often used for multiple years...and its also a best seller from a best from a toy line that has simply put been the DOMINANT not only girls 12" doll / toy for 57 years fending lines the likes of Jem, Bratz, Strawberry Shortcake, Cabbage Patch Kids, and Monster High. Even Joe can't claim that steady run. Hell even Joe itself is an imitator to Barbie. But Joe has simply not been able to hold the staying power Babs has and still does. Now onto the Flagg itself...sales of Joe product and popularity aside for just a moment...we have two options for a release of the Flagg... 1) Resurrect the old mold. I honestly don't know if any of it exists still...probably not Hasbro wasn't really good at keeping these things in re-usable shape back them. And honestly anyone who has ever owned a Flagg can tell you, the plastic on it was not the greatest. So between the shoddy original and like lost or damaged mold I highly doubt this is a viable option. Which brings us to... 2)Design an all new Flagg. This is where popularity and sales come into play. Simply put Joe has been in a decline since ohh the late 80's early 90's which saw the brand DESPERATELY trying to bit off themes like Eco, or Ninja Force, or tie ins like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat in 94 it collapsed so bad the Brand went to... The Extreme and Sgt. Savage again DESPERATE to reignite. It took NINE YEARS 2003 to rebound for the major push of Joe vs Cobra / Spytroops / Valor vs Venom, which didn't go as well as they hoped and that fell apart in 2005-6. In 2007 I think it took off again with Modern, and a lot of hopes were pinned on Rise of Cobra for the brand. And with poor toys and a poor film the brand sunk to the bottom of sales like it had a cinder block tied to its balls. It has not recovered since. Unless we see the brand DOMINATE and I mean *D-O-M-I-N-A-T-E* like the level of Transformers and Pokemon GO combined you are... *NEVER* Going to see Hasbro put down the money to redesign, produce and sell a Flagg. And as an owner of one...its just too dang big, to dang fragile with too many pieces that are NIGH impossible to track down. Seriously your better off tracking down a Rolling Thunder, or a General or even an MCC as a better playset. |

I know I may be comparing apples to oranges, but the price point could be lowered if the Flagg were available all the time, and Hasbro didn't have to recoup the cost of their tooling in one year. Also, the true heroes line shows how a full aisle of product can be sold at a reasonable price point; decent sized vehicles available for several years at a time. |

Maybe, it's too big of a bite for Hasbro to take, but I remember when the Spytroops MCC came out, and frankly, I wouldn't mind if it were available again, for a new generation. As far as the Flagg goes, I believe you are correct. The original molds are no longer available; it would have to be built from the ground up. But, Hasbro did show some interest with a Resolute version of the Flagg that never saw the light of day. So, I believe (hope) it is still possible, but they'd have to go with a multi year approach to recoup costs. |

True heroes has given us large air transports, big rigs and a friggin SUBMARINE!!! The wealth of sea vessels is overwhelming. I would suspect we will see a frigate or destroyer from True Heroes before we ever see a Flagg again.

They couldn't sell the Roc Mobile PIT for 129, even after it was marked down to 29. No one is going gamble on an item taking up that much shelf space if it isn't going to move. The kid in me wishes they would though. I'd buy 2.

We can barely get one retailer to pick up two half size figure assortments a year and people are asking why we can't get a carrier that, if released today at the same size as the 80's, would be like $400?
