Just to be clear on the phrasing of the character as she heads into the poll, it's Night Stalkers Shock Troop, not Trooper.

Trooper is singular. Troop refers to a single group, and troops can refer to several soldiers, but troop does not refer to a single individual. That's why I chose trooper, but what difference does it make?

The difference is accuracy in the final graphic, just like making sure the hyphens are there in the names when they should be.
"Troop" isn't formally defined as referring to a single individual, but it's become used that way in common parlance in recent times. Even in Joe, "Spy Troops" always sounded to me like it meant a collection of many individuals, not two groups of troopers. When the Emperor in Star Wars says "an entire legion of my best troops" it sounds like the casual usage of the term to mean individuals. Is the title of the character on Night Stalkers' card literally meant to refer to multiple distinct groups of female soldiers? I don't know. But I suppose it's possible to interpret it either way. It was an odd way to phrase it since I think every other Joe trooper figure code name said "troopers," not "troops." I can see both sides of the argument on how the singular code name should be phrased, especially given the club's frequent grammar issues on the cards. Interesting article on the use of the word here. There seems to be no resolved standard. Some draw the line at "troops" only being used to refer to undefined numbers of servicemen, some only for large numbers, some for any number greater than 1 but not just 1, and others are okay with saying "troop" for a single person. The article's author doesn't even mention the word "trooper" and she got blasted in the comments for that. I never would've imagined that accurate phrasing would mean you might say "I have two troops but one left and now I have one trooper." But that is at least one of the interpretations given. You are crazy. MLA. Period.
I agree with your sentiments about APA, though. My last certificate required APA, even though we were all English professors. What is that all about? |
