I hope I'm not opening up a huge can of worms here by addressing something from the last thread, but some very interesting conversations began there about what constitutes G.I. Joe canon. I am actually much more interested in that idea than whether character X should be eligible for this poll, and I hope nobody begrudges me the chance to say something about this.
Before I begin, I'd like to add that I am in no way advocating that I think a lot of Kindle Worlds characters should be nominated. I do not think any would win, and at this point, there probably are precious few that should enter the conversation. My concern has more to do with the long term perception of G.I. Joe canon (itself a very fluid and nebulous concept, admittedly, and probably a very subjective one at that). I also completely understand the concern that was raised about some character randomly being created and thrown into the poll. I doubt that said character would garner enough support to get voted in unless he/she truly had an impact on a portion of fans (in which case, isn't this what the poll is about?), but I understand the concern. I referenced a statement that Derryl DePriest made at JoeCon. His intention was to dispel the notion that Kindle Worlds authors are engaging in fan-fiction, which he and many others see if not as derogatory than at least being a term with negative connotations in people's minds. He reiterated that the works are sanctioned by Hasbro and are what he called near-fiction canon. What he meant was that although the works are not as closely aligned to Hasbro's vision as IDW's releases and file cards (for obvious reasons), they are officially recognized works by Hasbro and may be a source of inspiration for future toy releases. I bring this up mostly to help dispel this fan-fiction stigma but also because I'm concerned with the dismissive attitude that some members of the community have toward this initiative, despite efforts that Hasbro and other have taken. I truly don't care if characters from this source are admitted into the poll (as I said, who'd get support enough to win?), but if a line is to be drawn somewhere, I think it is important to situate this medium properly. Nobody disputes that the comics "count" (unless we are talking about one page with Rocky in it). Nobody but me disputes that the cartoons "count." According to Hasbro's VP, the next official source below those two is the works being produced on Kindle Worlds. I think you're probably right that there is a stigma attached to fan fiction and that's probably because there is a lot of bad fan fiction, mostly because the writers are untrained or inexperienced or poor proofreaders and they have no editors to assist in catching mistakes and plot problems, etc. So it makes sense that Hasbro wants to portray a more positive image, and promoting it as well as calling it near-fiction helps accomplish that, but at the same time, to play devil's advocate, the standards for publishing a story in Kindle Worlds isn't as high as publishing a novel for a major publisher. Again I don't say that to belittle the work done there, but it's a reality. In fact, I'd argue at the risk of sounding negative that self-published near-fiction is still much closer to unpublished fan fiction than it is to regular fiction that undergoes a much more stringent selection process, as well as revisions and rewriting. Again that doesn't mean that some great stuff can't show up in that domain, but it's less likely, especially when a really talented, professionally-trained writer can make a lot more money through other publishing avenues. |

Stiletto got nominated and won the poll when she was just a near-fiction character and a prototype. So by the rules, she was invalid for the poll and still is until November.
We could have voted in Rocky in January 1987 and only found out a month later he was "retracted" as a Joe. Technically he met all the standards of eligibility that month by being featured in an official Joe comic book while Stiletto still has not. |

Voted for Cobra Invasor. He is essentially V1 Snake Eyes with a cobra logo on the chest. He was released like that, because, in brasil, due to the lack of bad guys on the frist wave, they converted the all black commando from Joe to Cobra. |

Which was a very stereotypical interpretation of what a bad guy is supposed to look like that really spits in the face of the originality of Snake-Eyes.

Bill, I didn't mean to imply anything negative in my comment about Kindle Worlds stories, so I hope that you didn't take offense or think I was belittling the work of those authors, including yourself. As someone with a background in writing and a former teacher of writing, I appreciate the hard work that you and others have put into publishing stories through Kindle Worlds. There's been some good stuff to come out of there, but given that the editorial process is not that stringent or restrictive--in other words, as long as an author abides by a short list of rules, like no pornography or character drug-use or super graphic violence and can produce a manuscript without a plethora of grammatical errors, anyone can publish a Joe story and create new characters--I thought we should address whether we wanted to admit any new character that pops up in that domain.
