And that's what it's all about, I think. Makes me sad my son has apparently already "outgrown" action figures. Too cool for 'em now. As he told me a week ago, "They're (action figures) for little kids." I don't mind saying, it hit me right in the heart. To be honest though, he didn't like Retaliation much (found it boring), but he still likes Rise of Cobra.

There haven't been any posts raising the topic of what is a "true G.I. Joe fan" before this thread. I was previously discussing what makes someone a true fan of the modern-era Joe figures. I broached the extremely off-the-wall and controversial idea that you actually have to buy the modern-era figures to be considered a fan of them. With a possible exception for people who don't work and are too stupid to sign up for welfare checks.
Obviously G.I. Joe has comics, cartoons, movies, 12" figures, o-ring figures and maybe other iterations. Raising the topic of what is a "true G.I. Joe fan" is meaningless without narrowing your focus. Narrow the topic to "G.I. Joe movies" and we can rule out anyone who says they're a G.I. Joe movie fan who hasn't actually seen the movies. |

It is a very strange, bizarre, out-of-place idea that being a fan of something is necessarily a threat to one's financial solvency or marriage. That would imply that anyone who buys every new Joe figure is financially insolvent or divorced. There aren't that many new Joe figures being made to make that a believable assertion at all. If you have a "lifestyle" that you're choosing to spend money on over buying Joes, then you're a fan of whatever your non-Joe lifestyle is and not so much a fan of Joe figures. It doesn't make you a bad person and it's not an insult, it's a perfectly valid choice to not be enough of a fan of Joes to choose to buy them in lieu of other alternative expenditures. I'm not an Adam Sandler fan, so I choose to spend my money on action figures instead of his movies.

True fan...interesting question.
I don't think level of fandom can be judged by how deep or when you dive into a properties pool. Or how much of a product you amass. If you enjoy the property well enough to follow it on a regular basis than your a true fan...end of line. Now if its something you occasionally follow your a casual fan. Great example...I like the music of Prince...I don't own a single CD never attended a show or bought any merch, but if there is a Prince song on the radio I will listen. I consider myself a casual Prince fan. The opposite end of that spectrum is G.I. Joe where I buy the toys, read the comics, have tee shirts, Mod at this forum, watch the shows and films and daily have some sort of Joe related convo. But gauging depth of fandom by when you got into it or by the amount you amass is subjective. I consider myself a 'True' G.I. Joe fan for the above reasons stated already. But there is and are people in deeper than I am. For instance...I don't have any of the Action Force comics. I have all the US comic releases but not the UK...does that make me less of a fan? I don't think so. I have a lot of knowledge on the ARAH characters both old and new and international characters...does that make me a better fan than a person who knows nothing about Jammer or Manleh? Again I don't think so. I followed Joe through its up and down periods but have never seen all the Sigma 6 episodes...the series just didn't appeal to me. Again still no less of a fan. I have over 120 BATS...some people just have 1. In 2007 I stopped buying...money issues...but started up again in 2009. Hell...I had a Skystriker and Tomahawk chromed...the Tomahawk being the first in Joe fandom to be chromed I believe but I don't consider myself a more true fan than an 8 year old plunking down his birthday money to but a TRU 2pk. The point is no matter where you caught interest, or what you did or didn't like or how much you have or have not amassed. How true a fan you are really is just measured by how much you enjoy it. Trust me there is ALWAYS going to be someone with more knowledge, there is always someone deeper in the hobby than you are...if you enjoy a thing enough for it to be a hobby...you are a True Fan. |

Owner of a lonely BAT, I think, is spot on.
The problem with the question is that "true" kind of throws off the vibe for me. Does that mean passionate? If so I think pretty much anyone that joined a forum to talk about toys with other like minded adults has at least some passion. If you meant true fanatical then you have a jumping off point I suppose. However I'm not a "fan" of a lot of things. I'm being nitpicky but I think that this kind of really blurs how ppl will interpret the question. As to how I see it at this point if you like gijoe at all you are some kind of a fan given that I LITERALLY know one person in my personal life that has any interest in them. |

Hmm, Yes I am a true fan but GI joe is one of 5 major toy brands that I collect. I collect GI JOE as well as.
Star Wars Transformers Marvel 3.75 MOTUC GI joe warrants the most expensive purchases. I do not buy club Transformers or care for con exclusive MOTUC which are equally as expensive as club joes if not more. MY love for Joes come early from my childhood, and I would on and off again collect the vintage pieces in my adulthood, completely skipped the 2001-2006 line but when the 25th cards came out I was dumbfounded in nostalgia and have been actively collecting Joes since then. Right now my joe game is strong, I snatched allot of the con goodies and allot of the FFS 4. Which seems to be all cheaper this year on ebay than last.

One thing we all need to keep in mind is that you can be a "fan" (for lack of a better word) of something without actually buying anything. This notion that your "fanhood" is directly connected to purchases is false. I dig G.I. Joe--the G.I. Joe from my childhood--but I don't feel the need or desire to own all the toys again. I know a guy who is an expert on, and lover of, mid-century Jaguars (the auto brand), but you wouldn't know it from his home. He doesn't feel compelled to plaster Jaguar posters, models and memorabilia all over the place. Some just don't need to own the things they love. Or facsimiles of those things. While others have learned that possessing a thing isn't always a fulfilling experience. Last edited by SmokeBellew; 06-30-2016 at 09:19 AM.. |
