I created this thread because I see people saying, "He's an A list character." Or, "Hasbro won't produce that figure because he's a C list character." And I know everyone has their opinion on who is A, B, C, etc...
Some list them as the number of times in the comics, or the cartoon, or their ranks in the service, or their popularity. |

The A listers are the obvious Hasbro favorites:
Duke Snake Eyes Cobra Commander Storm Shadow The B listers are those that Hasbro likes to release occasionally, alongside the A listers Scarlett Flint Lady Jaye Firefly Destro Baroness The C listers are the ones that Hasbro says the club can release; Everybody else. |

To me, "A List" is comprised of characters that you pretty much know you'd get in the "first year" of a G.I. Joe relaunch. The characters that have been mainstays through the various incarnations of Joe that we've had in the last few years:
A-List: Duke Snake-Eyes Scarlett Heavy Duty (interchangeable with Roadblock) Shipwreck Beach head (seriously, Hasbro loves this guy) Cobra Commander Storm Shadow Baroness Destro Zartan Firefly (Once again...Hasbro loves this guy) A-List Troop Builders: Cobra Trooper Cobra Officer Cobra Viper Alley Viper Crimson Guardsman BATs HISS Drivers Red Ninjas B-List are characters that usually get made, but they often take a little longer to get around to. With a lot of these you could probably make a good argument they're "A-List"...the line is pretty blurry. B List: Flint Lady Jaye Wild Bill Gung-Ho Stalker General Hawk Falcon Jinx Snow Job Chief Torpedo Spirit Iron-Knife Ace Tomax and Xamot Serpentor Copperhead Wild Weasel Ripper Buzzer Torch Dr. Mindbender Croc Master (Hasbro seems to like him, too) B List Troop Builders: Cobra EELs Snow Serpents Iron Grenadiers Tele-Vipers Range-Vipers Steel Brigade C-List is pretty much every other named character and troop-builder that wasn't solely a (late-era) vehicle driver, mail-away or sub-team member in the ARAH era. I'd argue there's also a "D-List" of characters that were never really mass-retail releases, were only available in limited fashion, or were members of late-era sub-groups that never really appeared anywhere else, and late-ARAH-era vehicle drivers, as well as "new" characters created for later incarnations of Joe (Big Brawler, Dart, etc...). |

Awesome list. Ill add an addendum.
A list anything that sells a ton of no matter how many times its released by Hasbro B list is anything that can be packaged with an A list item to push people to buy more A list items. C list is mostly female characters because they dont sell well even though they are obviously loved and demanded all the time. D list are your actual favorites that the club releases. |

I think most letter lists depend on an individuals point of view.
That being said being on an A list probably comes from the following mix... -Popularity of a character -Recognizablity of a character. -Usage of a character. Lets face it when you say G.I. Joe most people casual fans or hardcore fans will think Duke, Snake Eyes Cobra Commander or Stormshadow. The 'stars' of the show so to say. The A list Some other characters will definitely come to mind, such as Shipwreck, Roadblock, Destro, Baroness etc. Not doubt because they are the most visible and used characters either the TV series, comic or toy line. The 'supporting cast'. The B List. But beyond the most used characters only dedicated fans will readily know characters on the C list such as Thunder, Cutter, Big Boa, or Darklon. But it goes even deeper than that. At least those characters either saw limited story time on screen or in comics. The C List is characters who have no time on tv and are basic background characters IF that in the comics. RoboJOE, Cyber Viper, Razorclaw, Gears all come to mind. And if you want to go deep...the D list...characters that are more or less outside the US exclusives. Topson, Shimik, Steel Cobra, or Invasor. But wait...we aren't at the bottom yet. The E List...characters that don't even have a figure...Weaponsmith, or Dr. Knox. BUTTTTT...and I think even I have hit bottom here...Con exclusives. And I'm not even talking Joecon exclusives like Repulsor...that guy probably is at least D list. I mean Regional Cons. The F list...guys like Snowbank or Timbit or Traction |

GI Joe was supposed to be an Ensemble concept, meaning there are lots of main characters and supporting characters. but dumb people have underdeveloped higher thinking areas of their brains, low functioning animal social skills and can only identify and remember a very few faces or personalities. Big companies have to consider and market to dumb people in order to have broad appeal because most people ARE dumb. so Ensemble casts just do not work in entertainment media anymore. So that leaves us with the 5 good guys and 3 bad guys that can be remembered by the dumbest people as the only thing that can possibly ever be associated with GI Joe. Remember this going forward, it is not the lowest common denominator that must be appeased anymore but the lowest POSSIBLE denominator. So from that point of view there is no A,B and C list. there is only "A" list and duuuuuuuhh huh huh huh wut?
Duuuh I remember the blonde guy duuh hu hu dat one cool ninjer guy wore a mask HUHUHUHUH COOL! Wasnt there hot hot chick HUHUHUH TITS DUUUUHHH OMG one of them had a friend didn't they HUHUHUHUH Wut was dat guys name, dat was a nuther guy! They all faught the guy named Cobra HUHUHUHUH!!
