I'm sure everyone already knows this by and that is the new shipping rates are insane!
It really comes across more as a scam than anything else. I'm at my local post office looking to mail a box. Box weighs roughly 2 lb. according to the scale but feels ultra light...even the postal worker commented on how light it was. So she quotes me a price: $14.10 delivered this week. I said fine and as I started pulling out my wallet, she reaches for a tape measure. She enters the dimensions and then says hang on, there is a surcharge for the box size (17 X 12 X 11.5). That will be $40! An extra $25.90 for a box that is 50% air packing and tissue paper? The kicker, this is a recycled box, the items I order that came in the box weighed more and I only spent $8.00 on shipping the previous week!!! There is a 400 mile shipping difference between the two packages. I can see doubling the fee making it $16 but $40? Thats insane. It wouldn't be so bad if I was making some coin off this sale but The shipping cost is 4-5 times what the item sold for. My shipping estimate based off weight, not dimensions. And people want to raise wages across the country?? Even higher rates coming soon. Anyhow, sorry about the rant, I'm through trying to sell stuff online. |

a corporation gets cheaper shipping rates than an individual, the company that shipped you a product in that box original is a privileged version of citizenship and has more rights than we do.

The point is that shipping costs are getting out of hand, and they are only getting worse. No matter if you are an individual or a corporation. You'll either see it as expensive listed shipping or increased cost of goods with artificially low shipping. Customers don't like to pay shipping, but they will pay $20 more for something to get "free" shipping, so it will most like just show up as higher prices for everything. |

Would it have been cheaper to use a flat rate "if it fits, it ships" priority box?
$40.00 is ridiculous! but, the buyer should be paying actual shipping cost. I recently sold a skateboard deck, on eBay , to someone in Switzerland. The box was 32" long 11.5" wide and 2.5" high. Shipping was less than $10.00 Last edited by Indiana Joe; 06-14-2016 at 04:42 PM.. |

The box I originally attempted was as normal as it gets. So now I chopped up a box making is as small as possible. Hopefully I'll have better luck with it. Quote:

Shipping was less than $10.00 Thats weird on the international shipping. I sent a piece of comic artwork to France via USPS and they charged me $75 (Fedex wanted $300). The box was 20x20x4. The inside immediate cover was made out of thin wood like material...very sturdy and weighed a little. I want to say the whole thing was 4 lbs. Quote:
This is simply due to volume discounts, not corporate privilege. If a corporation ships enough packages they can get lower rates. Same as you could if you shipped thousands of packages. Shipping by UPS with a volume discount will come out substantially cheaper than the PO for larger sized boxes. Not to mention that many companies will subsidize the shipping costs. For example when they offer you free shipping. Clearly the shipping is not actually free, it is coming out of the profit from the sale, it's part of the price you paid. This can also happen when a company charges you $8, but pays $15 to ship. They keep your shipping rate low but they are eating the loss.

It really ticked me off when they gave me the initial price of $14.10 and then as I'm about to pay, changed the price to $40 on a normal sized and very light weight box. |

Are you shipping overnight? Priority express would cost $40, but you can ship it for $10 using usps select. I ship stuff monthly and never pay $40 for boxes larger and heavier then you mentioned. Select or they May call it ground is the cheapest way to ship large items.
I print all mine from home, postal workers try up selling you. Last edited by hahoo3; 06-14-2016 at 10:30 PM.. |

They do something called dimensional weight. They have calculated essentially a minimum density for packages and if yours is below that limit they charge you for what a package that size "should" weigh. It's not a box surcharge, carriers just got tired of shipping large but light packages for peanuts because the larger the boxes, the fewer number of them they can fit in the truck. FedEx, UPS, and USPS all do this now. Frankenstein boxes can save your ass. I do it all the time.
You can avoid the surprise in the future by using the shipping calculator each carrier offers on their respective website. Give it the dimensions (rounded up if it's even a little over an even inch) and then either the actual weight (if you have a scale) or just put in 1 pound if you just want to see if your box size will screw you.

The price also gets exponentially more expensive the farther out it is. I sell a lot of customized full-size football helmets, and I can't Frankenstein the boxes, unfortunately due to size. If I send one to Tennessee from NC, doing my own postage at home, I can get out for $8. If I send one to California, it will cost me $40 easily. This is all for Priority. I can bump CA down to $20ish if I send it ground, but you're talking about an extra five days or so for delivery.
And flat-rate boxes are good for one thing: When you have a small item that weighs a whole lot. If the item is big, it won't fit any of those boxes. If it's light, it doesn't justify the price. It is a "flat" rate, but it ain't a cheap one. The post office used to be the only government agency that did anything efficiently and with financial competence. Its quality has plummeted in the past five to ten years.
