There is a way to use PayPal to ship items and get the corporate discount without am eBay auction.
https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_ship-now I've noticed rates up to 40% of and I ship Lego boxes with dimensions off 24x15x4 all the time that weigh 5 lbs for $9!

The price also gets exponentially more expensive the farther out it is. I sell a lot of customized full-size football helmets, and I can't Frankenstein the boxes, unfortunately due to size. If I send one to Tennessee from NC, doing my own postage at home, I can get out for $8. If I send one to California, it will cost me $40 easily. This is all for Priority. I can bump CA down to $20ish if I send it ground, but you're talking about an extra five days or so for delivery.
And flat-rate boxes are good for one thing: When you have a small item that weighs a whole lot. If the item is big, it won't fit any of those boxes. If it's light, it doesn't justify the price. It is a "flat" rate, but it ain't a cheap one. The post office used to be the only government agency that did anything efficiently and with financial competence. Its quality has plummeted in the past five to ten years. As for the efficiency and financial prowess of the USPS... Rather than funding themselves solely from postage receipts, they are subsidized by taxpayers (this article from Fortune suggests it's about $18B per year but whatever it is it's way more than zero). That's the only thing keeping their prices "low" even historically speaking. Essentially, we're all already paying some postage every year whether we ship anything or not.

I thought the dimensional weight only mattered for priority, not for regular shipping?
I assume they're trying to save space on their priority vehicles so they're charging a premium if you take up a lot of space. I guess they don't have a shortage of physical capacity for regular shipping. |

Flat rate boxes are even worse, and their prices have also increased. The USPS is banking on the fact that some people prefer the simplicity and predictability. It only works in your favor if you are shipping something extremely heavy.

One thing you can do is ship USPS at Staples and then see if you can get Staples gift cards at a discount to pay for it. Staples will also tell you if the UPS price is cheaper. If you have a Verizon cell phone, you can join their Smart Rewards program, which will start you off with a ton of points and add more every month automatically. You can use a few points to get $100 Staples gift cards for $90. You might also have a credit card that can cash in reward points for Staples gift cards. I just started doing this and am trying to see what other options there are for getting discounted Staples gift cards.

Dimensional weight is for every service level, I am a shipping manager at my company and have been doing this for 18 yrs. we primarily ship with UPS, we use their UPS worldship software and you put the weight in plus dimensions of the package, it could weigh 2lbs. but depending on the size that weight goes from 2 lbs. to 30 lbs. depending on the size of the box used.
UPS in particular daily volume is 12 million packages worldwide, they have to pack their trailers or planes as efficiently as possible to maximize the amount of packages they can transport, while ground service is cheaper, UPS is not a true residential delivery company, so they add a residential delivery charge, fuel surcharge and depending on where you are at from a UPS or FedEx hub an extended distance delivery charge not including insurance if you so chose to insure your package.

I know for sure that about 4 years ago when these changes came to the USPS, dimensional weight only affected priority shipping. You wouldn't get a "balloon rate" based on the size of the package if you shipped by standard parcel post. I don't know if that's changed. But the way to escape the balloon rate with USPS would always be to switch your option from priority shipping to standard.

Try shipping anything from Alaska thats not in a priority mail box. They get you coming and going. I once weighed a box at home and then taped the label on and when I dropped it off at the post office they charged $5 more because I put on incorrect weights.

Well, building a box wasn't any different. The box is just barely big enough to hold a Rattler and they quoted me $38. I told the guy, no hurry, so the cheapest rate. It's going a decent distance but I still can't justify spending $40 to send a $10 parts Rattler in the lower 48.
Anyhow, I pulled everything off Ebay. You combine the ridiculous USPS rates with Ebays increased rates and it's just not worth it. As for the Rattler I'm trying to ship, I think I'll pull the wings off and anything else I can in order to stuff it in an even smaller more "normal" box. If thats doesn't work, I'm calling the whole deal off. |

Yeah I shipped a Hanwei sword this morning, UPS Ground from Pearland Texas to a residence in Cali and it was over 50 dollars. Usually it's somewhere in the 25 to 35 range with the same approx dimensions and weight. I think eBay is also taking more now, as well. Sold for 325 after taxes, but I only got 260 back (and of course, it takes at least 4 days to get paid now). No more selling for me for a while. I work in shipping & logistics so I shouldn't be surprised, though.
