A few years ago my parents were moving from the home i grew up in. They asked me if i wanted my stuff back, including my fairly large collection of childhood joes. I was not a collector at that time so I didn't even bother to go pick them up, they ended up getting tossed. I was a bit too young when the line started so there was nothing from before 85 in there, it was mostly late 80s and early 90s figures and vehicles. I did have quite a large amount of both though. That said I was not a careful child, those toys were played with and played with hard. Weapons were lost, now that I've been collecting them I was quite surprised at items like Sneak Peek's microphone or Crazy Legs gun stock, I have zero recollection of those things because i guarantee you i lost them on day one. Weapons were chewed, crotches and thumbs were broken, etc. And when i finished with them they went into carton boxes and into the garage to sit at the mercy of Florida weather for 20+ years. I imagine there HAD to be plenty of salvageable things when i stored them, i know i had most of night force, sky patrol, and a few other more rarish/expensive things. What are the chances that anything survived over two decades of being left in 90+ degree heat though?

Who knows what was in those boxes if you had got them. Between the condition you left them in after doing what they were intended for and the Florida humidity for two decades, probably not good.
But the bigger issue here is your regret for not getting them. Everyone has regrets. Just happens in life. And shit happens, amigo. Can't take anything back, and thinking about it will just eat you up. Move forward. Find some more of those that were the most important to you if you haven't already.

You dodged a bullet.
You would have had a bunch of warn out broken down yellowed figures that all needed O ring replacements, missing accessories, that you'd feel compelled to hold onto because of nostalgia. I had my entire childhood collection when I got bit by the 25th bug. All of them missing accessories, paint chips, broken parts. Trying to fix and complete them was really a waste of time and money. I've since sold off and replaced all of them with much better complete figures. |

They would have been covered in spiders. I have a bunch of parts in my shed that I am leaving to rot for just that reason.

My collection of GI Joe, Mask, and Star Wars was stolen by the moving company, when my family moved in 1996. It was devastating, to say the least. I feel your pain, brother.

all of your toys were destroyed in an incinerator after being abandoned by you. Ever seen Toy Story 3?

My wife is from St petersburg Florida and upon visiting her Dad I found two 7 gallon tubs of her brothers action figures. All the rubber bands of the He-man and Gi Joes had been long gone.
The other day I installed a Alexander Calder piece for a real estate development company, any the company owners had the piece just in their outdoor garage! It was a totally "holy snickies" moment.

Anyone too afraid of spiders can bag and ship their gold mine...er...old toys...to me any time. I will brave the many-legged onslaught in search of the treasures within.
That said, the o-rings were probably toast. Yellowing may have been an issue on a large portion of them, but I bet there was still some stuff in there you could have found use for. But is that tiny amount of utility worth all of the effort you would have had to put into transporting and storing the bulk of that stuff for years until you finally developed an interest in them? No, probably not. So I won't say you made a mistake, but I won't pretend that the stuff was completely trashed, either. You got rid of clutter, and that was a fine move even though you now kind of want parts of it back. It's not like they were family heirlooms or one-of-a-kind mementos or anything. Just mass-produced plastic that can be replaced. Replace what you want, and don't look back at the rest.

Point of the first... the new shit is better anyway, the figures look better and the vehicles are made of better plastic and have added paint apps and better details
Point of the second..... I end up enjoying the minty perfect classic vehicles I hold out for on ebay more than the played with beaters that are still lingering around from one collection or another, I rarely end up displaying the parts missing discolored extras and fleet builder I pick up in favor of the perfect all parts there nice colored and if at all possible fresh stickers applied versions I have picked in in the building of my current collection.
