I was wondering if anyone had found if the version one Crimson Guard rifle or Viper v1 rifle had real life counterparts or something close to them.

I don't recognize either one, nor do they appear on this list:
G.I.Joe Scale Models: Weapons Some people think the CG rifle is supposed to be an FN CAL, but I don't see much resemblance at all. Last edited by solosam; 05-11-2016 at 12:16 AM.. |

As a kid, I remember thinking they didn't really look like any real rifle I was aware of (I was really into shooting and guns as a kid). The CG rifle has a stock like an AK, receiver like an M16, and the handguard is round, like an M16. Although the barrel has no visible gas tube or gas piston.
The Viper rifle is even more messed up with a weird second magazine. Marauder's Gun Runners has a rifle called the NVR that appears similar to the Viper and CG rifle and at the same time, is based on an AR15 variant. |

SAR-80 might be close enough for a CG rifle. The Viper rifle could be approximated by a Sig 556 chambered in .308/.762.

I always thought it was an odd grenade launcher magazine, you just ret-conned every adventure I ever played with Vipers since summer 1986. I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY.

I always thought that the front grip on the viper rifle was supposed to be a magazine for the GL as well..
As for the CG rifle, I figured it's an FNC with the Swedish style fore end and a solid stock...

If I remember correctly, the Crimson Guard rifle is listed as an "AK-48" rifle in the "Includes:" text on the side of the bubble on the packaging. I guess whoever wrote that text imagined that the weapon was a next generation USSR/Warsaw Pact assault rifle. I guess the closest thing to that in concept (if not exactly in appearance) would be an AK-74 (the successor to the AK-47 and the AKM), if you're limiting yourself to weapons that existed in 1985, the year the Crimson Guard figure debuted on shelves. If you're looking for a more modern equivalent of the CG rifle, well, you've got plenty to choose from. There are the all AK-10X variants (AK-102, AK-104, and AK-105 full-size rifles; or the AK-101 or AK-103 carbines). There's also the AK-12, which is supposed to replace the AK-74 as the standard Russian assault rifle. If you're just basing it on looks and not the concept, though, heck, it could pass for a variant of any conventional layout 5.56 mm assault rifle that isn't based on the AR-15 platform. It's a fairly generic-looking assault rifle. |

I never thought of it as any but a handle. Seems too small and there's a gap between the launcher and that handle. |
