i wrote him a letter back in the day when i was in 12th grade. i asked him about how each person on the book does their job while making a comic. if you follow the link you can see his reply. i even have the envelope he sent it back in, the address i blocked out as i still have family there.

Nice!
I had to chuckle when Hama referred to the Hasbro rep as a "sales-slime representative." Judging by the date that he wrote the letter, this indeed was around the time when tensions between the creative/editorial team and the marketing people at Hasbro were really coming to a head. Also, it's really interesting to me that they were still doing comics using the old "Marvel Method" at this point (where the dialogue is written after the pencils have been completed). Just about every comic these days is created in the more conventional, full-script style (the artist draws the art based on descriptions written in a full script). I wonder if Hama still works with the Marvel Method these days. |

when i wrote the letter i was like eh i'll never hear back from him. *side note- i've read since then that he said he took the time to respond to each and every piece of fan mail he got* i had written to others at marvel for different reasons before that and never got anything back from them so when i got the letter back from larry i was blown away.
at the time like the letter said i knew nothing of the process. i just assumed someone wrote it then it went to the artist, the letter....on down the line till the editor flipped through it and said ok. i didnt know that it went back and forth many times so once i read that i never looked at books the same way again. so now when a book is late i'm like eh its cool its alot of work kinda thing. i read very few comics anymore because they dont hold my interest. they are soooooo wordy its like reading a novel with pictures. i want some ass kicking bang pow kinda stuff. i read novels for the contect, my comics i want simple. good guy fights bad guy and wins in the end with the on going sub plot mixed in there to keep me wanting to come back next month. i dont know how many books ive read where nothing has happened the whole issue but guys walking around bsing about what they plan to do. just say hey i'm going to find that guy and kick his butt, then show it and let the action tell the story. i dont need all the build up or endless cross over's.... ok ok off my soap box now... thats why i like stories that are stand alone |
