Does anybody know what kind of light tanks or armor vehicles they use with the Airborne (worldwide not only the US army)??
Would the Armadillo/ROC Panther be small enough to drop out the tomahawk using parachutes for the Joe Airborne? (real life example) Thnx.

To my understanding, air dropping a vehicle involves days of preparation, carefully loading it and strapping it on pallets that contain lots of easily crushed (impact absorbing) material such as rolled up corrugated cardboard. It's doable, but doesn't necessarily jive with a rapid response capability. It's more practical for an airborne force to seize an airfield and then fly in the vehicles in the bellies of planes, or secure a landing field and deliver them by helo. As for the Armadillo, it has always seemed small enough to be helo-transportable. |

Plus if you take the seats out of a true vintage tomahawk the armadillo fits in through the rear ramp. its tight but it will go in once you learn how to load it.

The British Army would be more likely to air-drop the Pathfinders, seize an airfield and then stage an Air-Landing Operation, using C-130s and C-17s to move troops and vehicles in. There was a plan for that in Iraq in 2003, before the brass chickened out of sending PF in by air, opting for them to drive over-land, recce the airfield and then have troops ALO in.
The ALO never happened, the PF got ambushed by Fedayeen militias and ended up doing a 180 back to USMC lines, providing the US with a ton of intel on hostile positions they proceeded to batter. |

Hard to say without knowing weight, but the Armadillo is smaller than any real life armored vehicle. It would be cool if they sling-loaded it.

Looks like the Stryker can also, theoretically, be dropped (C-17 testers airdrop Army Stryker mobile gun system). That still leaves the problem of a crew jumping separately and then running around a battlefield looking for their vehicle, which is why the technique is hardly ever used. As for dropping from a Tomahawk, the more I think about it the more I'm skeptical. The Chinook and Sea Knight are both relatively narrow - even a Humvee won't fit in them, so air dropping a vehicle seems a stretch. But the Armadillo might be squeezed in (or sling loaded, as solosam mentions) to follow on right after the area has been secured, giving that airborne force some tactical mobility and firepower.

Actually dropping an armored vehicle by parachute isn't just a matter of being able to fit it into the back of a transport. The strains of surviving the landing and still functioning mean that this is really only realistic for vehicles that have been specially designed for the purpose - note how the Russian BMD family has roadwheels that fold up so that (as far as I understand) the vehicle isn't really landing on its wheels and tracks so much as on the bottom of its hull.
Also, I have heard stories of US Rangers experimenting driving Humvees straight off the back ramps of C130s that were flying just a few feet off the ground. I'm not sure if this stunt was successful enough to becoming SOP though. I really like the idea of airborne armor, but I think the reality is that any vehicle that can pull this off is going to be fairly lightly armored and certainly not anything in the MBT class of protection or firepower. |

The Wiesel looks kind of odd, but it is such an excellent concept. And it is exactly the kind of thing that would fit into the Joe universe.
