I've always thought they had a pretty sizable one for who they are respectively. One is a Delta Force/Spec Ops team and the other is a terrorist organization. The former has an aircraft carrier and the latter has an entire sea port on their island. For their respective sizes, I think they are doing well in the aquatic dept, at least comparable to their air and ground forces.

I know this is a little off topic, but since we're talking about naval vessels, can someone who owns them quickly measure the following craft?
WHALE Devilfish Water Moccasin Moray BUGG Just the length from stern to bow is fine, I can figure out the approximate height and width based on that. I'm building some of these, and want to know how big they should be in relationship to one another. Thanks. |

While there could have been more Naval boats back in ARAH I think the Navy is pretty well represented given the number of vehicles we got back then. We got the mammoth USS Flagg, and other water vehicles like the Devilfish and Hovercraft. In the comic the Joes also had the Jane, the giant oil-tanker-like boat.
Don't forget to count the Skystriker, the F-14 was a Naval fighter, so that could be seen as a representative of the Navy as well.

I don't remember if it was the 70's or very early 80's but we did actually do a ship to ship boarding from a Destroyer I think. It was the first ship to ship boarding the US Navy/Marines had done in over a hundred years. I vaguely remember it from military history class.

While most of us growing up in the 80's thought the Flagg must of been a Nimitz class, or other "super" carrier it was actually based on the USS Intrepid. Those old carriers were phased out of service by the 80's. But they still had some in the mothball fleet. It's far fetched, but then what isn't with GIJoe, they could of gotten one out of mothballs and refit it and manned with the bare minimum of crew.
It's crew could have been all reservists. Since the Flagg wouldn't be at sea 24/7 or even more than a few days or a couple of weeks at a time. Make sense to have a crew on stand by to be called up only when they are needed. |

I always pictured the FLAGG as more of an Amphibious Assualt ship like the USS America. Considerably smaller than a Supercarrier with a crew of about 1000 instead of 4000
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_America_(LHA-6) Still for a unit like the Joes having an entire Aircraft carrier is pretty impractical. Something like a Littoral Combat Ship like the USS Freedom or the Sleeker looking USS Independence would probably suit most their needs as a Speacial operations force. Not much room for Aircraft aside from a Locust or Skyhawk, but similar to the USS Jane I imagine from the comics. Slightly bigger but with a crew of only 40-50. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedo...al_combat_ship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Independence_(LCS-2) Cobra needs something like the Aircraft Carrier Sub like in the Sigma Six series.
