There lies the rub of what is most difficult for any writer in the GIJOE universe.
Larry Hama was a writing consultant on Spy Troops, so is that Beach Head the same as the Beach Head in the comics? No. Same as the Beach Head in the cartoon? No. Could Mike Costa extrapolate many of the qualities of Firewall from DDP and incorporate them into his version of that disavowed character? Yes. The backstory given to Firewall in IDW does not really fit the DDP Firewall character. Cobra: Cobra Civil War #7,G.I. Joe Cobra Vol. 2 Cobra Civil War,G.I. Joe Comic Book Archive Now my personal opinion is that unless explicitly stated each time a company claims a universe as its own, it is a new universe. It is also the reason many fans have their own ideas of what is and is not good for storytelling. Now someone break the three way tie so that the number three hundred character is not lumped in with the 299 vote.

Tie easily broken by me. Vapor is clearly the best character in the list. And now all the named Cobra actoin figures in ARAH made it into the top 300.

Side Track and Sidetrack?
Lifeline 2002? Dusty 2 (Night Rhino driver)? Is Bench Press really Rock'n Roll? |

Its all subjective. I am not really consistent in my view other than what feels right. I actually count them all together for these purposes. It all adds to the character. Overkill is the big one for me. Straight robot, cyborg, Sigma six, DDP. But Cobra Commander has many different flavors too. Some interpretations I like better than others, but cumulatively it all adds up.

Lifeline went through eligibility of these characters already in poll 219.
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/4831106-post3.html ----------------------------------------------------------- Airborne (1983) and Airborne (Sky Patrol) - separate characters with the same code name Altitude and Major Altitude - separate characters Cobra Commander and Krake - different characters. (The CC that Chuckles kills in IDW is the first) Croc Master and Croc Master II - different characters, one succeeding the other Dial Tone and Dial Tone - siblings Diana, Volga and Verna -- different names fr the same character Doc (Carl) and Doc (Carla) - different characters, one suceeding the other Dusty (Tadur) and Dusty (Paquet) - same character with different name probably for TM/C issues Heavy Metal, Rampage and Speed Metal - Heavy Metal and Rampage V1 are the tank driver. Rampage V2 is a ranger (see New Sculpt) and Speed Metal is the accelerator suit guy. Lifeline (Steen) and Lifeline (Scott) - same character who was changed presumably for copyright issues Long Range (ARAH), Long Range (S6) Long Range (DTC) - ARAH is separate from S6 and DTC who are the same Mainframe and Dataframe - same character (Copyright issues) Rock and Roll and Bench Press - similar enough you could argue the same, but I'll allow separate nominations if someone feels strongly about it. Shockwave and Shockblast - same character (Copyright issues) Sidetrack (Boyce - Medic) and Side Track (McLaughlin - Demolitions) - separate characters (How these were released so close together boggles my mind) Lt. Stone (Exteme), Lt. Stone (Sigma Six), Sgt Stone (ROC) - all separate characters. They're just too different to reconcile. |

Lifeline 2 had a new head sculpt and a name, new birthplace, so I lean to him being a new guy. Rhino Dusty is just a kitbash, yet has new birthplace/file name, even if much of his bio is like the original's. I'd like both characters to be retconned into the toy universe with new code names just to fix things. Until then (never), I place them in limbo.
Mercer and Mercer V2 had different names and birthplaces, but were clearly the same guy. OR WERE THEY? Maybe "Mercer" is the official Joe designation for any Cobra defector? LOL. Speed Metal is movie (movie toy) universe's Heavy Metal. Same with movie toy Repeater. Movie Ripcord is that universe's Ripcord. And movie Heavy Duty has a different file name/nationality, but is essentially that universe's only Heavy Duty (unless something dumb happens in the next film). Who is Tankblast? Zap, right? Is that official? How concerned are we with those guys who only appeared as mini figures? Will someone nom Ghost Ninja? Probably. Last edited by Sean_C; 12-13-2015 at 11:05 AM.. |
