I've always wanted to know how other people go about opening up their carded figures. I like to keep the card in the best shape possible so I use a box cutter razor blade to remove the bubble. I try to be as careful as I can. After I remove the figure and the bubble I like to put the full card into an Ultra Pro platinum page and place it in a binder.
I've heard of some people using a hair dryer or heat gun to losen the glue on the bubble, but I have never tried due to fears of ruining both the figure and card. If anyone has any better tips please share your thoughts. |

I pretty much do the same as you do, except with an xacto knife instead of a box cutter.
And I've heard enough varying accounts of heat guns and their effects on cards/figures that I'd rather not try.

I use a xacto knife. Given time the rest of the glue might dry up and the rest of the plastic will just fall off in twenty years or so.

To me it's a knife with a hollow handle that the blade slide out of the tip of. (Yay! Horrid grammar!) The blade is extremely thin, and scored in places so it can be broken off as the tip gets worn. I call that an X-acto knife; most Albertans do. Americans and Maritimers seem, from conversations, to call that a box cutter. Am I wrong? |

Well to me an Xacto knife is:
And what you described is what I think of as a box cutter. The difference being an xacto is more like a scalpel and can do much more precise work. Also "xacto" is the name of the company that makes the knives.

Whats all this talk about removing the bubble? Are you just trying to open the figure but keep the box and bubble pretty much intact?
I just use an exacto knife or a box cutter and cut along the bottom edge of the bubble close to the card. I only cut the sides and the bottom leaving the top attached as a hinge. that way I can take the figure out if I want, and still be able to put it back in and close the bubble and hang it up. |
