I was under the impression Copperhead was a generic as a kid, which wasn't helped when they did a story in AF Monthly/GI Joe European Missions, which DID use two guys in Copperhead's outfit!

The US comic seemed confused, as well. There are a few issues where a WW-Rattler blows up, but I guess one could imagine he used the famous Cobra escape shoot to bail out and is one lucky dude.

Same went for Grunt when I was younger. On the cartoon a lot of the Joe troopers looked like Grunt. But Hasbro never made Joe troopers for retail in the 80's. So I had at least 5 Grunt figures and used them as troopers.

^well, there we also have another funny tale. In Europe, Grunt was the mailaway figure for 1985 in Action Force and was the AF Infantryman. So he WAS a generic!

That was from the website Halfthebattle.com, who also somehow found Crankcase in more than more episode of the cartoon.
Wild Weasel's uniform was used for no-name pilots in the Special Mission issue where Star Viper dies. |

Yeah, Wild Weasel and Copperhead were "named" characters, but I assumed that there would be other troopers using the same uniforms, ie all Rattler pilots would wear something like Wild Weasel's outfit, although I could imagine a different color than bright red.
So Lampreys are Eels, as are the Paravipers and Snow Serpents, makes you wonder if there is anyone left to be an Eel. |
