This is a good question, but I agree that the Iron Grenadiers are the backbone of Destro's army like Vipers and Blue Shirts, whereas the C.G.s were (supposedly) brought in as "elite troopers" for special cases.
Speaking of which, would I be wrong to assume that the C.G. could be the "elite trooper" sent in to make sure that a Cobra team wasn't "going over budget"? I always thought of them as bureaucrats, and having an accounting degree, I could see why the regular Cobra trooper might hate them (as depicted in the Sunbow cartoon "The Germ"). I could see one telling a fire-team, "Hey, you only have so many bullets. The Twins are on a very tight budget and need to buy another yacht!" As some were lawyers also, I always thought of these as the guys who would work in the office by day, and then maybe suit up at night (concealing their identities) and maybe rough up (or eliminate) anyone who might screw with a Cobra case, whether it be a witness, opponent, judge or D.A. - anyone who might get in the way of Cobra interests. However, I've never really seen them used in this way in the comics when in uniform. As a matter-of-fact, in the comics, I don't even know why they bother to put on their uniform, since they're much more effective when they're undercover. The only reason I could see would be ceremonial purposes for one of Cobra Commander's extravagant parades. Any thoughts? Last edited by seaneley; 05-06-2015 at 07:01 PM.. |

I like to follow toyline continuity no matter how wrong it is.
Destro commands the Crimson Guard (per Crimson Horseman's file card) as an elite private army. Iron Grenadier are also Destro's elite troopers. It makes no sense, but even wrong file cards are better than none. They may be the grunts of Destro's forces (MARS Troopers seem to be security), but the average IG could kick the stuffing out of a standard Viper. Last edited by Sean_C; 05-06-2015 at 10:36 PM.. |

The IGs can't be "elite" unless Destro has other less elite ground troops for them to be better than. He did in the comic but there were never any action figures.
I basically think of IGs as tough, disciplined ground troops. CGs are probably equally tough in a fight (though there are fewer of them) but additionally fanatically loyal. The most trusted of all Cobra troops. The whole finance/espionage thing makes less sense to me - I think of them as bodyguards, political officers, secret police, military police, and generally menacing, ruthless, intimidating mofos who no one (even the fancy Viper special forces types) don't want to mess with. |

Of course the IGs can be all-elite. The Joes are all-elite, too, ain't they (don't mention Dee-Jay and The Fridge)? I like the idea of Destro going for quality over quantity, and see both the CGs and IGs as the only Cobra troops that can actually match the Joes pound for pound.
Of course if the IGs are all-elite what are the Annihilators? Superflous, that's what. They can take those home-made whirly-birds and buzz off my universe. Never could get over the fact the regular IGs look like the most solid fighting force in the world while their "elite" look like Jar-Jar Binks cosplaying as a flamingo. |

I agree with a lot of the characteristics pointed out from previous posts.
But I'm going with IG's. They're battlefield hardened warriors. Espionage is good & all but when your covers blown, the slick-talk ain't working no more & it's time to sling lead... I'd want an IG to have my back.
