I decided to revive the Greatest Trooper poll and take it to top 100 with a new rapid-fire voting system, using multiple-choice voting. This seemed to work well when I tested in a G.I. Joe animals poll. The results made sense:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...-all-time.html Slots 51-60 in the poll results will be filled with all 10 current poll choices in the order of their vote totals. This poll will run for a week since we're placing a lot of characters. You can vote for multiple choices. It's up to you how you want to distribute your votes. You can just vote for a single favorite or give "thumbs up" to everyone you think deserves to place in this round. Keep in mind that if you vote for all 10, it's like not voting at all since you won't change the final ranking at all. I will most likely be using this rapid voting system to do a vehicle/playset poll after reaching the top 100 here. So if there are any kinks to be worked out in this system, hopefully we will work them out in these next 5 trooper polls on the way to filling out the top 100. Incinerator is the new add. You may nominate up to 10 trooper characters who have not yet won or entered the poll and WHO YOU HAVE NOT NOMINATED PREVIOUSLY IN THE TROOPER POLLS. Your past nominations are listed at this link, alphabetically by your username: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/4726708-post78.html YoJoe.com figure listings for reference: YOJOE.COM | G.I.Joe Action Figure Archive - By Year - All Winners: 1: Cobra Soldier (35.29% with 24 of 68 votes) 2: Viper (33.96% with 18 of 53 votes) 3: Crimson Guard (36.73% with 18 of 49 votes) 4: B.A.T. JJ, out of curiosity, what do you think are the benefits of allowing multiple-choice votes in the poll? You wrote that the results seem to make sense, but I'm not sure what that means. I only ask because I see a distinct flaw by allowing multiple votes to determine who the greatest trooper is. I'll illustrate why.
For simplicity, say I run a multi-vote poll with only 3 choices: X Y Z Let's say only ten people vote and their first picks would look like this: X 6 Y 3 Z 1 X would clearly be the winner in a traditional one-vote-per-person poll, but now let's say everyone also casts a vote for their second favorite, but it just so happens that the six voters who voted for X like Y next the best, and the three who voted Y like Z second best and the one who voted Z likes X second. The new results would look like this: X 6 + 1 = 7 Y 3 + 6 = 9 Z 1 + 3 = 4 Now Y becomes the winner, when in reality he only won because he was the second most favorite of the majority who liked X the most. This example shows how the poll results don't necessarily reveal who the "greatest" actually is. |

Ultimately, Tanksmasher, I don't know if that happens in reality. Is there really going to be a situation where everyone agrees on 2nd best, but is polarized between 1st and 3rd best? It seems much more likely that the debate will occur between 1st and 2nd best, not 1st and 3rd. Also, some people may like the top two characters equally, and not want to vote one over the other, so here they don't have to pick.
Also, let's say we were voting for president. You can make the case that we should have a president who almost everyone likes, rather than one who half the people love and half the people hate. And no poll system is perfect. This may be less perfect than doing 50 separate polls, but the results will come in much quicker and be pretty close to what you would get with 10 times the effort. Sure, a few positions may come out differently, but even if you ran the exact same poll the exact same way twice, even then you would get some slightly different results. The poll itself is also less important here than the nominations. Because this nomination system is essentially an equal vote in and of itself, there isn't a huge need to even run the poll. But asking everyone to submit their top 100 and averaging them out won't get as much participation. Also, if any of you want to alphabetize or re-order your past nominations list, just PM it to me and I'll update the post with your revised version. Looks good, Langdon. Since you've never nominated before, you only needed to make sure you nominated characters who haven't made it into the poll yet. Say hi to Lisa S. for me. No, that's too obvious. Make it L. Simpson. Had to move the rules here for now since the first post exceeded maximum length: Rules: This series of polls is to determine the greatest unnamed troopers, soldiers and army builders in the G.I. Joe multiverse. The current intention is to take the greatest list up to 100. 1: ELIGIBLE CHARACTERS: For a character to be eligible, there must exist more than one of the character with the same name and wearing the same uniform. Repainted figures like Cobra Soldier and Cobra Officer or B.A.T. and Jungle B.A.T. are eligible to enter the poll as separate choices, but different cartoon vs. comic book colors, different sexes, different hair colors or other minor variations are not eligible. We are also not distinguishing between resculpted versions of a character that was basically the same design. Characters who were never made as figures are eligible, but there must be a description and pictures online that describe the characters and where they appeared. You can ask in the thread if you're not sure if a character is eligible and I will make the final determination. 2: NOMINATIONS: In each poll thread, in addition to voting, you can publically post 10 nominations for an eligible character who you have NOT nominated before for this series of polls. You may abstain from nominating if you wish. If you attempt to nominate the same character twice, I reserve the right to stop counting your nominations altogether. I will keep a post updated and linked in each poll thread containing everyone's nominations to date sorted alphabetically by their username. 3. REDESIGNS: If you are nominating a later redesign of a character who has the same name as an earlier one, you must note the year it was introduced and/or the version number. Otherwise I will assume you're nominating the first version. You can go to the YoJoe.com link above to find the year and/or version number of a figure. 4: TALLIES: The current nomination tallies will be posted in the 1st post of each poll thread and edited there periodically to update the counts. 5: POLL SELECTION: Each new poll will be populated with the 10 characters who are currently at the top of the nomination list in order. 6: TIES: Any ties in nominations will be broken by the character who got to that number of nominations earliest. Any ties in poll winners will be broken by who entered the poll first or, if they entered at the same time, by who had the most nominations when he entered.
